Ebay and bank transfers

    Hi,

I recently won an auction for a pair of pearl jam tickets for a show in Rotterdam on ebay, The final bid was 240 euro,

Payment methods listed with the product included Paypal, so that was fine,

I then received an email from the seller informing that there were problems with his paypal and could i pay using a bank transfer,

I have never paid for anything using bank transfer, i'm under the illusion that there is nothing stopping him receiving the transfer and not sending me my tickets, and there will be nothing i can do about it as it was a payment outside of Ebay and paypal, would i be correct in presuming this? he has also offered me insurance at an extra 8.50 euro,

What are your opinions on this as i really want the tickets!?

P.s. The seller is based in Germany.

Your correct, he could take your money and run, you have no protection outside of paypal.
You would be safer not to do the deal, there's a lot of con artists on ebay.

    Ok,

But also he has 100% feedback, but nothing over say 30 - 40 euro,

    What registered post?

Sounds like a scam to me, walk away and search for the tickets again from another seller - frustrating but not as bad as losing your money and still having no tickets.

Make sure you also report vendor to EBAY so that they can remove his account.

Will i also get a non payment strike for this?

This sucks, tickets were impossible to find,

If the seller said you could pay with PayPal in the listing and then said you couldn't afterwards then you are in the clear. You can just say you're not happy paying with any method other than paypal, the fact that he changed the terms means the transaction is void and it was his actions that make it void. Tell him you're not paying outside of PayPal and request that the transaction be cancelled. If he won't help you ask ebay to cancel it and they'll contact him for you. Definitely don't go with a payment method that leaves you open to being stung.

Ok thanks for your help guys,

I emailed the seller today with my concern ,and he just replied:

    MY EMAIL:

Hi, I will be using bank transfer as you requested, I have not processed it yet as i am a little nervous using Bank transfer once i transfer you the money there is no guarantee for you to post the tickets, and absolutely no way of me recovering the money,

I apologize if this seems rude, but i am just from some sort of gaurantee,

    Thank You

    my name.

    HIS EMAIL:

I understand your concern, it's a matter of trust.
If you have any way to get more security then mail me your suggestion.

    Greetings Johannes.

So i gather from the above that the seller is somewhat open to other methods of payment,

I dunno what to do, have ye got any suggestion of a safe payment?

have you a link to the seller?, a good ebay reputation is hard work and if the seller has good feedback with a good history he could be genuine, paypal can be funny with your account at times, I'm still saying don't do it, that's not to say if I was in the same position I wouldn't..

I have found in my dealings on ebay that very often German sellers don't accept PayPal at all. It seems that the whole PayPal concept hasn't really caught on there yet. I know that sounds weird, but there's definitely more German sellers who don't accept PayPal than there is from other countries.

So I suppose a lot of German buyers and sellers do rely on trust when dealing via bank transfers on ebay. Personally if I see a buyer doesn't accept PayPal I don't buy from them, even if it's something I really want. I think everyone should use PayPal because it guarantees your money if something goes wrong and that's worth the couple of cents they charge the seller for the service in my opinion.

I don't know of any other guaranteed payment method. If you go with the bank transfer it could work out grand, but I wouldn't chance it myself unless it was for a small amount of money. It's really annoying when it's something like concert tickets that are pricey and hard to find.

I'd definitely pass on that one. That's not a lot of feedback to go on even though it's all good.

Last Christmas I bought a dvd box set from a seller with better feedback than that and as it came up to Christmas I got an email from ebay telling me the seller was bogus and to make a PayPal claim. Turns out he'd sold a few low price items to build up feedback and then fleeced a bunch of people in the run up to Christmas selling items that didn't exist. I got my money back through PayPal so it was ok, but unfortunately that's the kind of thing some people do.

If I was spending over 200 euro I'd need to know I was spending it securely.

Ooh, that looks and sounds quite dodgy. Even though a lot of German sellers don't accept Paypal, that doesn't mean that all German sellers who want you to pay by bank transfer are genuine.

The fact that he listed Paypal first, then removed that possibility due to some "problem", is worrying. What problem has he got with his Paypal account? Could be they've closed it on him due to being naughty, or perhaps he has some sort of account restriction, meaning he can't receive such a large amount of money.

Regardless of how hard the tickets are to find, I'd walk away now. 240 euro is a lot to pay if you get nothing at all. If it was 50 euro I'd give it a shot, but not for 240.

What he said. Walk away now. Too common on ebay these days. Its a common practise to buy or sell a lot of cheap things to get the feedback count up. Its bad luck for you that you wont have the tickets but without the security of paypal you may aswell throw your money in the bin. As the seller said to you in his email it is a matter of trust and I wouldnt trust him.

Up to you in the end though obviously. Best of luck whatever you decide

    hi op,

I have a number of items Germany and Europe with bank transfer. But these items were low value and the sellers had Very good feedback. Buth there is absolutely no protection with bank transfer even though you have his bank details.

A lot of german seller dont use paypal but they dont usually say on their list that they do use it and then say they have problems with. I think that sellere sayed he used paypal so that he would get more buyers.

Its possibel he is geniune but i wouldnt risk it

Ok, i'm more likely gonna walk away from it, after what you have been saying,

But the seller is open to suggestions, so does anyone have any other ideas for payment which will give me some gaurantee?

and also the seller is offering me insurance for 9 euro,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,713 ✭✭✭✭jor el

Insurance? On what, the post? That only comes into it if he actually sends you the tickets, and most postal insurance won't go above €150 anyway.

There are no payment methods where you can pursue him, bar the other online payment companies, which he probably doesn't accept either, or at the very least would take time to set up.

There are no guarantees with sending money, unless you use a credit card, or Paypal (funded from a credit card).

If he doesn't sort his Paypal issues, he'll find it quite hard to sell those tickets at that price.

The moment anyone tries to move the goalposts on a transaction like that walk away fast.

You can't blindly trust any feedback system either - these can be manipulated. We dealt with an eBay seller that had a 100% positive rating and hundreds of transactions that turned out to be selling counterfeit goods. When pulled on it they offered a full refund and keeping of the items in exchange for leaving positive feedback.

Apart from escrow i dont think there is a service that will have a guarantee.

Can you get the item somewhere else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,357 ✭✭✭✭SteelyDanJalapeno

The seller has now also offered to pay when i receive the item rso,

I have replied asking him how this works, what does rso mean?

    Just an update for ye,

I went ahead against all the advice, and payed with bank transfer,

he sent the tickets once the transfer cleared and they arrived without a hitch,

    happy days,

    You are very lucky.

If you check out his profile some other poor guy didn't receive his tickets.

The same thing happened to me... Seller had 100% positive feedback, but was selling blatently counterfeit goods. I agreed to keep the goods and take the refund, but left neg feedback anyway:P

Steer clear of this one, OP!
