Boardsies with their own businesses / websites

    Hi all,

If this has been done before then my apologies but I didn't see anything like this here. Most posters in this forum are for obvious reasons entrepeneurial minded so it stands to reason that a high percentage of posters here are involved in or thinking of starting their own business. This could be something as small as a blog with some google adverts on it or a big multi million turnover company.

I've read in a few threads various promises to set up a website to help other entrepenuers and to bring people together etc etc etc and it strikes me that the posters here are already together in one place offering advice and help etc - the only thing missing is that in some cases the poster involved is wearing the mask of a username and it's not widely known what area or business they are involved in. Yes people may have mentioned in a particular thread what they do but there is no central directory.

So what I am proposing for those who are happy to reveal themselves as such is that regular posters / contributors post here with a rough outline of what they do. If the mods were happy for people to post the actual name and website that would be preferable but this is not essential. I know that there are anti spamming rules in place here so it would have to be very carefully done in order for there to be no spamming but what if this thread was a focal point for posters here to get to know what the other posters do.

I am sure there is opportunities there to trade with each other and benefit each other. Could be as simple as link exchanging / contra advertising on websites, get help with a bigger job than you can handle etc etc. I'm not saying that people should haggle back and forth in a thread but if you know x is a printer and you need some printing done you can pm x and go from there.

What do you guys think ?

I don't have a business yet but I think it would work. Theres no reason why the MOD'S wont let this happen as its already being done on the Self defence and Martial Arts forum.
This Thread was actually set up by a Mod who wanted a Directory of Martial Arts Clubs. Its stickied on the top of the Forum.
Some might say a club is not a business. I disagree. Some of these clubs make a tidy sum, what with Subs, Gradings,Sale of gear and Seminars etc.

    Good idea Pat.

    Hi Gamesnash.ie (Pat)

Must admit I have not read all the rules pertaining to posting. Therefore am not sure if under the rules of Boards.ie it is permitted to "trade". However, there is room in the user CP area to list details of who you are and what you are doing, so that is perhaps where it should be encouraged to detail the line of business contributors are in.

I noticed from your details that you actually have your own area on Boards.ie. Can you perhaps direct me to the area in the rules as to how to go about creating your own area on Boards.ie. Perhaps you could details as to why you decided to create your own space on boards.ie (some of the reasons would be obvious) and how you qualified ?

    Thanks,
    Rudolf289

Hi Rudolf - I'm not advocating a full trade facillitation scenario - just a central point for everyone to know where everyone else is coming from and to make finding help or contacts that bit easier :) The user CP requires you to click through from each individual users profile whereas a single thread gets you everything at a glance.

As oscarBravo has mentioned already Dav and Darragh are the guys you would need to talk to about commercial interaction forums etc.

The only problem I can see with this is that lots of people use this forum to ask for often sensitive advice and feel they can do so because it has no repercussions for their business. The worry is you would have to go anonymous once your details are released and even then if someone looks back over your posts you may have revealed something you would not normally do?

There would be no problems I could see by having regular posters post about there business' in this thead.

As Locamon said, there are posters who have already stated that they prefere to remain anonymous. Obviously this is their choice, but it shouldn't stop those who wish to post about their business' posting up in this thread.

There will be some rules thougrh, ie. posters must have at least 50 posts on boards before posting in this thread (should help seperate spammers from the rest of us, also if this thread is going to be a directory, would people like to see no discussion in this thread about business' or just have a ist of business' compiled at the start of the thread, with links to the posts about the respective business'. I don't mind taking care of the admin of the thread.

So maybe we'll keep this open for a further bit of discussion and then I'll start up a new thread and we can start up with people posting about their stuff.

    Hi shoutman,

What I had in mind was a similar to the sites that accept laser card thread - have a thread with the first post being edited as each person signs up so even if its 15 pages long page 1 has the names and business details of the posters in the following 15 pages.

To facilliate people who may not want to give full details maybe it would be something like ...

    Gamesnash.ie (pat) - Games retailer - Gamesnash - www.gamesnash.ie
    Random person a - randompersonas business name - www.randompersona.com
Random person b - supermarket owner

It would require a bit of work on the mods part to be fair so thank you in advance. If you were feeling particularly creative you could make each username a link to their public profile like the way mine is above.

Anyway that's just my suggestion on it but I think something along these lines would create a great bit of community spirit in this forum.

That sounds grand to me, I was thinking more of like you have it, with each poster posting a little bit of history about his business.
It would all be indexed as you have it in your post, so you could click on the business name and it would bring you to the post about the business...

  • Company Representative Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭Gamesnash.ie: Pat

That's even better :) link to the initial post from the user and from there you have a link to the profile / pm facillity.

Blue shimmering please, that is exactly the type of thing that I don't want to happen. I've deleted and edited out any mention of your spam site.

OK fine, I get the picture - bye! If this is what you think you are perfectly entitled to your opinion - but I thought spam came into your inbox? Don't worry I will not be contributing to this thread again and if I have offended anyone, sorry.

If you have a problem with me deleting links to your website you can either start a thread in feedback, or pm another of the forums moderators.

My problem with your website is that you are pretty much trying to sell people a program for making easy cash, and everyone knows that there is no such thing as making easy cash, so in my opinion you are looking to pray on the not so smart to try and purchase your program.

That's ok, I did not intend to prey on anyone and am sorry if that is what came across! I am happy with you snipping it if you feel that is appropriate - all I was doing was saying what I was doing online!

    Lol,

What about a "Boards.ie Synergy Group" within the groups section?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 390 ✭✭MB74

I like the sound of this, but how do you decide between those selling legitimate products (insurance, printing, building services, etc) and those who are preying on others, who makes the decision on who can post here and who can't? Also I think 50 post is too little.

Would love to see something further on this, how should it progress, where should it appear, who should be allowed post, what exactly can you 'sell' without going too far?

Do hope this go the same way as other similar threads / ideas have gone.

  • Company Representative Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭Gamesnash.ie: Pat

I wouldn't neccessarily see it as coming on here to sell. Just a point of contact and information about what each boardsie does etc. After that it's p to an individual if they wanted to contact that person / request a quote on something etc but I'd see it as no different than looking through the golden pages except this time you "kind of" know the person.

50 posts would IMO stop people signing up just to get their business mentioned. Obviously though a person longer on boards with thousands of posts could be viewed as being more reliable / less likely to stake their reputation here on posting a shady business operation.

Apologies for the bump from nowhere. I didn't want to start a new thread on the same subject. Just wondering how did discussions on this pan out. How do members feel about it now considering the challenging times we are all in ?
