i recently had to get a new water pump for my car and went up to MSL in Pottery road to get a price. I was told the pump was €375 plus VAT and €300 for labour plus VAT.

I went to a place in Bray and got the pump BRAND new for €55 inc VAT and got it fitted for €100.

This is a crazy difference and I would advise people to stay away from MSL and go to motor factors for their parts.

MSL also refused to carry out labour if i brought my own parts

The way things are at the moment I doubt they will be able to charge that kind of money for much longer. You should call them and tell them that you will be telling eveyone you know about it. Oh... and well done! I always support my local motor factors 'cos they know what they are selling, even though there is a large UK based motor factors near me that sells stuff cheaper but the service is the worst in the world! (They also sell bicycles).

yea i told everyone. i also went back to MSL and told the guy what price i could buy the part for and his simple answer was that the quality wouldnt be up to MSL standards, i got the part from german auto parts which has an excellent name and the staff are very helpful.

i would never go to MSL again, there just rude and rip offs

id advise people to go to a local motor factors and buy the parts and go to your local small garage which always has a fully qualified mechanic working on the cars whereas the large garages tend to have a lot of apprentices- i dont mean to sound like i am putting apprentices down but id much rather an old time mechanic working on my car they pick up a lot more than the computers in bigger places

Yep, all of what you say is correct. Main dealers are a rip off and all that stuff about ''genuine msl quality parts'' is bs. Your motor factor part will have been just as good and will not compromise warranty. I checked it out. I had my vehicle serviced at Atlas. Good blokes. See other thread,Rathgar motors.

None of the main dealers offer any incentives to people to part with their hard-earned cash, and they never did. It's the same in the UK with ludicrous prices for spares. No wonder they're all going down the crapper.

A year or so ago, my wife was quoted close on €300 for the privilege of having a new ignition key+chip+fob for a Mutsubishi. I mentioned it on the Motors forum because I couldn't believe it.

Needless to say, her old ignition key is still taped up and glued, but fortunately still works.

My MSL story (Pottery road also)

Was having trouble with my car cutting out so brought it in for them to look at. They couldn't find anything wrong (was only charged for 1/2 hour labour). 2 days later the car conked out ad I had to get it towed (VW Golf). Brought it back in and told them I wasn't happy seeing as one of their mechanics had only looked at it a few days earlier. The fuel pump was banjaxed. Got a price and was told I'd also have to pay 1.5hrs labour. Told them to go ahead but I was expecting to see the money I'd paid 2 days earlier to be knocked off the bill. Person i spoke to got very snotty but eventually told me it would be knocked off the bill (after much arguing by me)

Picked the car up, she reminded me they'd taken off the money I'd paid the time they'd found nothing wrong. Fair enough I though.

However when I looked at the bill they'd still charged 1.5hrs. I asked why. Was told that the 1.5hrs was 'only an estimate' and it took longer than expected etc. Asked did I look stupid/why hdn't I been contacted etc? After a bit of arguing I just cut my losses and paid, telling them they'd never see me again nor anyone I knew as I was gonna tell absolutely everyone I knew who'd owned a car type serviced by them

    AVOID!!!

I have a 2003 passat 1.9tdi that needed the following work:
    Timing belt and water pump
    Oil and filter change
    Replace temp sensor
    Replace drivers side CV joint

went to MSL for a quote, and boy did I get a quote, "about €1,750" he said, "could be more as we may have to remove the dash to repair the faulty temp gauge".

I was on vagdrivers.net and saw that one of the site sponsors was doing a special offer on timing belts (link), contacted him and he gave me a price for the same work of £300!! Granted I supplied the CV kit, but the job was carried out on time and I'm more than happy with the service I got from him.

The garage is a small independent setup in Belfast, Walsh Motors, going to be getting the timing belt /service for the missus car done there soon enough.

I'd recommend Otto over GSF for parts any day! (Used to drive C and E Class Mercs back in the good ole days!)
I had lot's of problems with GSF supplying me with the wrong parts, never with Otto.

Small correction, the part will not compromise your warranty par se but if that part fitted failed and caused other damage then it would not be covered under the original warranty. That would be the same for most warranties for most things.

In general I always shop around and include the main dealer but breakers yards offer the best value in town :)

Its a well known fact that a lot of Mercedes dealerships in the south source a good deal of their parts throught the north or even the uk as the distibutors in Ireland are fond of the zeros on the end of the price. MSL is part of MDL who are the importers and distributors of all mercedes in Ireland. I worked in a Mercedes dealership and we used to bring in 90% of all filterseither from the UK or the North. They worked out about half the price when bought in bulk !!!! Plus these were the same parts and carried the same warranty too.

Shop around is my answer, Try themain dealers in the North too as the price difference is usually noticable.

I had a problem with MSL, a small one and not with a Merc either, but rather a Mazda. Had to buy some small plastic parts for the roof, they cover the slots and screws for a roof rack. I only needed one, but they said that the smallest number I could buy was eight. I understood and thought fair enough. Maybe I'll need another one or two in time.

Two weeks later I received them. They charged me like a tenner for each of them (VAT included) and charged me for all eight. However, they only sent me four! I called them about it a couple of times and they agreed to send me the other four, but they never did. I just gave up.

    I thought that was cheeky.

don't go anywhere near MSL. I had a car 'serviced' there, completely broke down 4 days later. Totally useless ripoff artists

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭Philip42

Ditto, had a problem with my Golf a few months ago, it was vibrating under accelaration. They had the car for almost a month!! Week 1, 1000 euro (injector replacement), week 2 1100 (second injector replaced, week 3 1200 euro, new camshaft, and each time they told me that it would fix the problem before adding something else on!! The total came to 3300 euro! Avoid at all costs!!

As people have already pointed out, unfortunately I had the pleasure of dealing with MSL. These guys will lie their heads off when you are putting the car in for a service, then charge what they think you are good for when the billing time arrives. They are used to getting warranty and corporate work.

DONT GO NEAR THEM unless you are a corporate and want to be robbed.

I drive a 35 year old Mercedes and officially Mercedes still supply all parts through their main dealers and that means MSL in Ireland. Thought I'd shop locally rather than online but MSL have no interest in a car my age and if I contact a UK main dealer they refer me back to MSL due to region rules.
MSL took the details of the parts I wanted but never rang back and deny all knowledge of me having called. Its about time they lost the franchise !

Just an example of MB prices. Supply + fit Bosh MAF €385.00 + vat. .
Otto in Galway supply Bosh MAF €185 including vat!!!! No more than 10 mins to fit. (just as easy as changing a light bulb)

MSL recently got the import facility for KIA and Hyundai. Perhaps with the downturn in the market they have lost their interest in Mercedes. They were never the cheapest to deal with whether Merc, Audi nor VW. I think theirs a huge growth area for a number of independent specialists to set up and service prestige brands. With Internet it is easier to acquire genuine parts for prestige brands

Did MSL lose their Audi franchise? I passed by the Grange dealership last weekend and the Audi showroom is now changed to Hyundai

Got ripped off by msl deans grange I gave them €22000 for a lemon audi
Problems with tyres then problem with doors not opening and to top it off
I just found out front had been damaged and it will cost up to €1100 to fix
And msl deansgrange sales rep has desided he doesn't want to know
I telling anyone out there if your buying a car donot buy from
Msl deansgrange they will sell you a lemon
And then they will laugh at you your better off buying a car from a back
    Street garage

I assume a car that cost €22k came with a warranty?

What was at fault with the front end?

A huge amount of cars will have had superficial damaged and been repaired in their life. We're talking about a dented and filled wing, not massive structural damage that is making the car a danger to drive. Considering you didnt even notice, whats the rush to go spending €1100 on a new wing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 Audi a5

No car has no major structural damage but when you buy a car from a main dealer who claims to be the biggest and best you think that your going to get a quality car when your paying out top dollar for it.
So all I can say is if you want a lemon go to Msl deansgrange and you will
    Get on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 Audi a5

Don't by from Msl they take your money and rip you off
Better buying from back street garage there better value and better cars
Msl mercedes deansgrange if you want to buy **** they have it trust me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,129 ✭✭✭kirving

It's superficial damage which you didn't notice. I can't see what the rush to spend €1100 on it is all about. What was wrong with the tyres and central locking? A puncture and a flat battery?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 Audi a5

Sounds like you work for them anyway no it wasn't a puncture they mixed the
Tyres directional and ordinary and because of this the car was so noisy you couldn't hear the radio even turn up to level 28 and for the door not opening
If it was a flat battery all together it took them 7working days to fix it and for the damage to front can't ****ing sale it till its done because when I went to other garages with it the pointed out to me that wing and bumper ar shaded
An then they ask what happen to it I pay €2200 for it and 12 weeks later offered €15000 for it
That's what happen when you buy from Msl mercedes deansgrange
    You buy ****

You dont need to keep posting the same thing here, once is enough!

I don't work for them, no. If you returned with the same attitude as you have here, I can see why they fobbed you off. You have to stick to facts, and make your problem very clear rather than just going on a rant.
12 weeks may mean another year, lots milage over a mental cut off point(say over 48-51k will make a bigger difference than 51-54k), and certainly another owner. Plus, a garage will always give you less than they plan to sell it for, so you were never going to be offered €22k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,306 ✭✭✭blahblah06

Well I had an experience today!!
Merc dublin wanted €100 plus vat to scan the merc with diagnostics. (Couldn't do it till next Thursday mind u)
Rang portadown they had a space today and charge for a scan £40 plus vat.
Turned out 3 of my parking sensors were faulty.
Portadown wanted £51 for each sensor. £11 for all the paint and £99 for labour.
However, the nice chap informed me of an eBay item number where I purchased all 3 for €75 shipped and can fit them myself.
God knows what the full price would be down here :-)
    Shop around
    Bargains to be had
