New Costume

Doctor Who fans have been given their first look at the new costume being worn by Matt Smith, the 11th actor to play the role.

The Time Lord's new look consists of tweed jacket, bow tie, rolled up trousers and black boots.

Filming on the new episodes begins on Monday in Cardiff, with the new series going out in spring 2010.

Smith is taking over from David Tennant, whose last episodes will be shown at the end of the year.

"I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show," Smith said after arriving on set for his first day of filming.

    'Come alive'

"The scripts are brilliant - I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."

The Doctor will also have a new companion - Amy Pond - played by Karen Gillan, who meets the Time Lord in episode one of the new series.

There is also a changed team behind the scenes, led by new lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat who will be responsible for the overall creative direction of the show, as well as plot and character arcs.

"Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way," Moffat said.

Since its return in 2005, Doctor Who has won a number of accolades, including Baftas and National Television Awards.

    That's ...

    ! ...

Actually, that's not too bad. It's probably the most consciously old-school costume of the 3 from the New series. Definitely the most geeky / nerdy (and not in a "geek chic" sorta way), I can already hear the zingers flying around during his earth episodes, Smith looks like he just stepped off the set of an old 50s Ealing movie

    "Margaret! Fetch my pipe!"

Oh and Karen Gillen looks even younger than in the press shots. I still would though ;):D

Actually it kinda works, harkens back to early Doctor Who. I also think that the older, tweed jacket look contrasts nicely with Smith's young face - a deliberate choice no doubt. I've a hope that Moffat is going to make him an old man in a young man's body, acting more mature than DT's tenure.

Assuming of course that it isn't just part of a period costume, for the first time since Smith's announcement I don't feel concerned about series 5. It must be said though, it's not a very marketable look; I can't exactly see it gracing DVD covers easily ;)

Oh I'm sure they'll find a way. It does look like he's mixing his John Smith costume from Human Nature with the boots from his Ninth incarnation (The companion having stolen his Tenth pair of shoes.
Meanwhile the TARDIS has also had a new lick of paint and it's not all blue. (Plus a decoration dug out of the archives for good measure.)

    This too shall pass.

Im generally very happy with the new look. Since I heard about the casting, I've been cheering for massive boots and massive boots I've got!! I like it. I agree, I think it's a case of an old man in a young mans body and getting the costume to reflect this. I think it's very Troughton esque with the jacket and bow tie. I also like how they've kept the quirky hair!

The TARDIS was actually more of a shock to the system than anything else! can we say BLUE!? :D It looks like a very retro TARDIS, I suppose to match the retro doctor!

The sonic screwdriver also looks like a blast from the past!

Nice to see that converse live on in the companion! :D

Someone told me that picture looks like the offspring of Ten and Donna queuing up for a Britain's got talent audition :)

It'll be the best costume ever if it comes without a sonic screwdriver.

Presumably we're going to be "treated" to the old one breaking, only to get a replacement by the end of the story. Hmmm I wonder; does anyone know if that new one bares any resemblance to the one River Song had? Perhaps this is where & when the Doctor gets that super-duper new screwdriver.

Either way, I hope hope hope the writers tone down the excessive use of the bloody thing. It's such a lazy writing crutch.

I'm quietly confident on that one given its overuse was somewhat mocked in Moffat's Library story.

Acting like a 21 year old would make him more mature than Tennant's Doctor. Although from watching "The Christmas Invasion" which was on again recently, Tennant's Doctor did have glimpses of a darker, more seasoned Doctor. "No second chances; I'm that kind of a man". This was something that occasionally cropped up, eg: in the "Human Nature" two parter, but was largely eschewed in favour of Jarvis Cocker in space.

'jarvis Cocker in space' is a good analogy! But I loved him being all hyper and loopy! At the same time I'm looking forward to a possibly more mature Doctor. I really like those glimpses of darkness and I hope to see more of them.

In saying that I would say that the darkness is going to be blatantly obvious in the specials!

    I dunno, whats been leaked
makes the last two episodes look like more kitchen sink fests... although it'd be pretty cool if they were 10's last minute, fever pitch dreams as he goes.
