How much to get brakes replaced?

Quick question. If I'm getting my car serviced and I get a call to tell me that my brakes are completely worn out and need to be replaced, would anyone have a rough idea of how much that should cost including parts, labour, vat etc?

    Thanks

Is it just the brake pads or the discs also?

I got 4 pads last service for €220

I'm not sure exactly if it's the pads and the discs. He said it would cost €190 so that's reasonable then?

Depends on car and what exactly is being done. Is it just the front or back? or both? By the price I'd imagine pads but need more info

When a garage says that the "brakes" need doing they're generally talking about pads only. Cost really depends on what car you have, whether you're going to a main dealer or not and even where the garage is located. A few years ago, Liffey Valley Renault were quoting 150 quid to change the front brake pads on various models. The pads themselves were around 60-70 quid. Indy garages and garages outside of dublin would be significantly cheaper and indy garages would tend to use cheaper (but probably equal quality) parts.

Generally a car won't need front pads and rear pads at the same time so presumably your quote is for 1 axle only.

Like other have said just pads or pads and disc and is it front and back or one of the above assuming fluid will be replaced too. Will check what I was charged for pads and fluid when I have the chance.

It's a 2000 Fiat Punto. The dealer is tractamotors in Blanchardstown. He said the quote was for all 4 pads. I bought it second hand last month so I wouldn't be surprised if they were all worn down.

So if it's all four it looks reasonable enough then?

For all four pads thats cheap...

Would a 00 Punto not have drum brakes on the back therefore only having 2 pads on the front?

Get a breakdown of whats being done. If it's front pads i'd say it's a bit steep

This is the entire break down:

    labour: 190
    brake pad set (Z): 42.41
    set brake shoes: 55.06
    Stud (F): 3.37
    spark plug (A): (x4) 29.16
    screen wash:1.65
    20K selenia: (x4) 32
    Air filter: 12.81
    Oil filter (Z): 14.45
    Oil disposal: 4.50
    385.41 +VAT= 437.45

So was I ripped off :)

Not in a million years would I pay that bill on a 9 year old punto for basic service stuff. Fair enough, you got front pads & rear shoes done and a service with plugs & air filter but still. You werent ripped off as this is what they charge but I would have taken it to an indy garage who would have done the service for alittle over a hundred and the brakes, Im sure pads & shoes could be bought for €60 max and whatever labour to fit them. 250 to 280 complete in indy country garage Id say. Dublin possibly alot more
