Netbook for Travelling???

Going buying a netbook for a round the world trip. Would be using it for emailing, looking up the internet, using SKype and maybe a bit of streaming or downloading. Would a netbook be able to stream or download or would that be too much??

Have been considering the Samsung NC 10 due to the good reviews so far on boards and for the long battery life which would come in handy travelling but would anyone else have any other suggestions of comparable netbooks for a lower price? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Be wary of new netbooks using the Intel Atom Z520 CPU, it's a bit of a step back, according to reviews, it provides better battery life at the expense of useability. Any netbook using the Atom N270/N280 is fine.

The Asus Eee 1005HA is getting rave reviews, not sure if availability is good in Europe though.

Don't forget the Dell Mini 10

All your specific needs quoted in your original post are fine on a netbook, the main concern for you will be internet access.

    What's your budget?

I just got an NC10 there last week, for the exact same reason as yourself. I'm brining it around with me to edit photos and maybe do a little bit of blogging. This netbook is perfectly alright for streaming or downloading. If you're into gaming it can handle a lot of games too. Oldish games like GTA Vice City and Quake or Unreal etc.

Advert 4212 available on Pixmania now for €229
    Worth a look.

Thanks for all the responses. Budget would be up to €400 but obviously would buy something cheaper if it was as good. Where did you buy yours? Cheapest place I see it online is with Laptopsdirect but have read bad reviews about their service if something goes wrong so might get it elsewhere. Not going travelling for a few months so would hope that if nothing goes wrong in the first few months that it'd be good for the trip.

Got mine at laptopsdirect.ie, got a refurbished NC10 which worked out about 314e. There are a few different grades of refurb you can get, from A1 to A4. A1 is like new, while A4 is like sh!t - broken hinges or whatever. I got an A2 which is "minor cosmetic marks" or something. The only minor cosmetic marks I could find were on the cardboard box it came in. The actual laptop itself was sparkling. If you want to save a bit of cash, get a refurb.

What's the problem with laptopsdirect anyway? Where did you hear that they're dodgy?

Use search, you'll find your answer.

This is the main discussion board that I've seen on Laptopsdirect - seems like their grand until you have a problem but if you have a problem its a lot of hassle to get it fixed.

I really like the Ideapad s9 or s10.

I saw an s9 in a shop a couple of weeks ago, and it was rock solid.

The track pad was a little bit small tho'

the S10 is bigger, so should not have that problem:

    here or here

There's a new version of the S10, more or less version 2. Less heat, along with different specs. Be careful which one you pick up, the model names are confusing.

Yeah, There is an S10e, and an S10-2, and another one with a built-in 3g card, but I think you can get that in the US with a Verison contract.

Has anyone used a Lenovo before? i am not familiar with the brand at all. I am looking at the Dell Inspiron mini 10 & the Acer Aspire One. My old Acer just died, and my history with Acer as a brand sucks, however, I'm not totaly holding that against them. I ultimately just want to get the best notebook i can. I need it for word docs, some Excel and internet use.
