Buying a vehicle from a private source.

What are a persons rights if they buy a vehicle privately, i.e. not from a garage or liscenced car dealer but from someone off the paper, and after a short period, say two to three weeks, a major component in the car failed resulting in huge cost to repair, the cost being almost as much as the car is worth in proper condition.
What are the buyers rights in this instance? Does a buyer in this situation have any rights to redeam some of the repair costs from the previous owner?
Hoping this question is in keeping with the Legal postings charter.
    Thank you.

Unless you received a written guarantee, then there is very little you can do.

Not unless you want to go to court, which might not be worth it.

If the seller gave you a written guarantee you might be able to take it to small claims court.
