lots of present stars - their time is now. Sorry, hobby horse of mine :)

Ingram is a class act. I saw him at the National Senior Indoors when he ran one of the NI underage races and ran a solo 1:55 indoors. He is very strong and is more 400/800 than 800/1500. Interesting to see how he progresses.

She was having a great season too. She's jumped better this year but i think she got an injury in May which unfortunetley set her back a week or two

Yeah, she was flyng up in the 12.50's earlier and I assume she got injured. She is a fine athlete though and has the build to be a great athlete in the future.

Good to see Joan getting through too.

Any news on Scanlon or Farrell?

Good effort from Paul to qualify. Still a bit off his 49.17 indoors but a big improvement on his effort against Joseph Dowling in the juvenile All Irelands when he was outside 50 seconds.

Looks like Ciara Mageen won't have heats in the 1500m.

I dont mean to sound greedy but could she double up and do the 800m tommorow and Friday considering the 1500m is a straight final on Wednesday or are athletes only allowed do one event?:P

I am not sure if there is a rule that restricts an athlete to one event, that may be something that is just impelmented here.
However, given her racing schedule I'd say Eamonn Christie and Ciara are happy that the heats were cancelled and its just the final to be negotiated! Given that she has had three races in the World Youths all under 2 mins 06 and raced in Mannheim in addition to her domestic campaign, she may not need the additional races. It would have been nice though, another medal on an international stage!!

Not so lucky for Edmond O'Halloran, he didn't advance from his heat - 5th in 14.31

She finished 4th with a 1.79pb. She went out at 1.82. Fantastic result - especially given that her pb coming into the event was in the bottom third of the field.

That is top drawer. Thats the standard for the Euro Juniors had she been in a position to go for that, great to see. More importantly she must have the big game temperment too.

Well done to Edmond, ran close to his best. All you can ask of them.

He ran close to his PB into a -1.4 wind which was excellent.
This is surely the most impressive performance by an Irish team at the EYOD and even any major Youth/Junior championship!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 463 ✭✭mrak

Yes - absolutely super stuff. Well done Shane Quinn. Sounded like a tough one:
Shane Quinn of Ferrybank AC has secured the Silver medal in the 3000m at the European Youth Olympics in Tampere, Finland. The Waterford boy gave a gutsy performance and was in a state of exhaustion after the race, taking over twenty minutes to get back on his feet. Great Britain’s Callum Hawkins was a clear winner in 8.23.62 minutes, with Quinn recording 8.30.12 minutes and Russia’s Il’gizar Safiulin claiming third in 8.32.53 minutes. Safiulin (Russia) and Quinn took out the early laps and did all the hard work with the Hawkins (GBR) sitting in throughout. Hawkins then made a decisive move with 300m to take the title. Quinn battled up the home straight to get the better of the Russian and was “thrilled to bits” with his medal haul.

Congrats to Shane and the rest of the team on their great performances. 8.30 that certainly is superb running!! Please God now Ciara will go well tomorrow, for some reason I think the women's junior record of 4.17.84 might be in danger!!!!
Hopefully also Killian Barry will bounce back from his dissapointment at the worlds.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭HaileGeb

Not far off his PB of 8 mins 24 John Treacy's Youth record survives the first serious assault on it in quite a while.
What a great few weeks it has been for Irish middle distance and distance running! Hopefully Ciara will run to her usual standard tomorrow.
Great credit is due to all these youths as by and large they are all performing to their PB's going into the championships.
