Date & Time Problem on Laptop

    Hi,

I have a Dell Vostro 1510 laptop, that was actually an impulse buy last August.

I didnt even take it out of the box till Xmas time.

Anyway since I have ever turned it on, the date and time in the right hand corner always reverts back to 8th August 2008 and I think possibly 8am.

If I change it and then turn off the laptop and back on again the date will revert back to 8th August.

I think I may have tried previously to change it on the BIOS screen and it worked for a while but again reverted back to the same old problem.

    Any solutions, thanks.

Hi, the most likely cause is a dead cmos battery. Are you getting any error on boot up?

    o/s

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

I am not noticing any error on boot-up, like it seems to load normally.

I havent really looked at what it says on the screen when loading up but seems ok, should it be obvious if there is a problem?

Is it possible that it was a dead cmos battery that came with it?

Machine may require a bios update, there is one that was released in March this year available here @ Dell.ie

Make sure laptop is plugged in when installing it. Change the date/time back to normal in Windows then apply the update. Would be strange for a Bios battery to die that quick on the laptop, even if left in the box for that period of time.

I would say as well that the problem is because of the CMOS battery. Why should bios stop working, when it was before?

That doesn’t even warrant an answer.

You will need to replace the CMOS Battery, very easy to get done. If you have warranty just phone Dell and advise that your System time keeps reverting to original manufacturing date.
You should see an error on Post though stating that the CMSO battery is dead or that the Time and date are not set.

Installed that update and so far so good, thanks.

Will keep an eye on it though.

    Cheers for peoples replies

Hopefully all is good now, I find it very strange that even with the laptop in storage for a few months that the bios battery would die that quickly so hopefully that does the trick permanently.

Unfortunately the date and time have reset back to the original date.

As DevilsBreath said I may need to contact Dell now.

I dont think I would have any receipts/documents from when I bought it - probably threw them out.

Im sure there would be some serial number on the laptop I could quote?

There is a service tag on the bottom of the notebook, if that is missing/rubed of you will fined it in the BIOS usualy on the firstpage/top of the scroll screen.

If you phone and give them that tag it will have all of your details linked to it so all good :)

More bad news, was just on their website looking at online technical support and entered my service tag code and it seems I actually bought it last June and is out of warranty :(

I just presumed I got it in August as that was the date it kept going back to.

I have tried to apply online for a warranty extension, dont know if that will work or does it cost.

    Any other ideas?

    Cheers, I will buy that.

I have never opened up a computer before but without reading through the step by step instructions, should it be handy enough to do?

That particular part should be very easy.

All you need is a small Philips screw driver, remove one screw and of pops the panel.

Bought the battery part a couple of weeks ago and finally last night got around to putting it in - took a couple of hours between taking apart the computer and putting it back together as needed to search other sites for more detailed instructions.

Anyway unfortunately this hasnt solved the problem as the date and time are resetting to the old time of August 2008.

Anymore ideas? I wont be putting that battery part I took out last night back in anyway :)
