Worth getting into 24?

    Hey folks,

I got a loan of season 1 of 24, and I'm near the end of episode 3 and fairly underwhelmed. I've just finished the Wire, so my standards are pretty high :p

But so far I've found 24 very shallow and Hollywoodish... I mean I feel like I'm just watching a Harrison Ford movie spread out over several episodes. I like the idea (each episode is an hour...), and Jack is pretty cool, but everything else is kinda 'meh'.

Should I persevere or just wait and find something else?

I didn't post this in the 24 forum cos I want a general response, not just fanboi's ;)

It is extremely hollywoodish. I wouldn't give in after 3 episodes but if you don't like season 1 then it's definitely not for you.

I just started 24 aswel, I think I'm on episode 6 and I'm finding it very difficult to watch episode 7. It kind of drags for me but im determined to watch the first series.

If you think it might get good then go ahead and watch.

I watched season 1 a few years ago when it was first broadcast and was pretty tired of looking at it by the end, I never had the desire to see the other seasons. Too long and I didn't care about the characters after a while.

In my opinion, it should have been called "12", that would have been plenty.

Well it is very Hollywoodish as you mentioned and it is nothing compared to the Wire in terms of overall quality, but I did enjoy the first season. But the problem thereafter is that Season 5 is very good but other than that, all the other seasons are very average and sometimes downright terrible.

If you havn't seen the likes of the Shield,Oz,battlestar galactica to name a few, then don't bother with 24 and watch these shows.

I personally love it but it really isn't for everyone. The first season is fantastic and yes it does start off a bit slow but I definitely think you should continue on with it and then make your mind up about wanting to continue on or not.

    I do like 24.
The plots do get a little thin after season 3 or 4.

I find that both 24 and The Wire drag on occassions TBH. The Wire more so but that is mainly because the are hour longs rather than 45mins and a little bit more involved than 24 will ever be.

You really need to leave your brain in the other room when watching 24.

The first season is the best so if you don't like it you don't like it, lots of twists and turns and by episode 13 they have finished the series so you would want to get ready for the next 11hours that have very little to do with the first 13 IMO. Oh! and some of the twist are dreadfully played out (e.g. Anemisia plot  )

    But Mandy is brilliant :)

I think you will get into I am just thinking about what happens in the first series and what Jack does (in particular with Nina as he kidnaps her) and watch out for Kim's friends dad tut tut tut. :)

I like hollywood shallowness its what makes it great haha. :D And the first season isn't half as shallow as the following days.

IMO The Wire has ruined TV, you will never be able to look at another show without asking what is missing from this pile of ****?

    Giggity.

As others have said, trek through the rest of S1 and see what you thought of the whole thing...you'll either feel cheated or you'll be hooked.
Personally I love it...it's full of obvious faults, overblown acting, unrealistic scenarios and clichéed cardboard characters, but plot twists and non stop action keep you interested (or not). I've watched the whole lot...felt slightly let down by S4 but still battled through it. I thought S7 was excellent but I don't know what other fans thought of it.
One odd thing I noticed about 24...without fail the final hour is always an anti climax...the excitement seems to peak around hours 20-23...the one exception is at the end of S2.

You really should have watched this before Wire...

And season 1 didn't it end on a high, with Nina
    killing terry
    .

Mandy at the end of season 2 brilliant :D

Currently not enjoying Day 7. Watching on RTE

Oops...thought that happened in hr 23 or even 22.

Another odd thing about 24...I've never felt compelled to watch them through again...neary all my other fave TV shows I'll have watched multiple times, even when I can nearly rhyme them off...I think the only 24 I watched twice was S2.

You need to watch them again with someone who has never see them before and every now and then go .... This great haha wait wait yeah didn't see that coming did you :D of course this becomes quite annoying for the other person.

I'm not sure how well 24 works as a DVD set. It worked on the telly, 'cos you got your fix once a week and were left hanging at the tick-tick-tick at the end, and that was half the fun. Being able to get the next episode immediately kinda takes away from it. It's not necessarily about the story, it's about the telling of it!

    I Love TV shows,

But, Try as I might I could not get into 24. I think the hollywoodish comment is a very good one. I watched season 1-2 and a good bit of 3 I just gave up one day and started watching something else. I even tryed to watch the new season on sky cause I liked the idea of
    Tony being the bad guy
. But, low and behold couldn't really watch it after three episodes.

Most TV shows are very Hollywoodish today. I would actually say that 24 Day 1 isn't even all that hollywoodish, a little experimental. What shows are you watching at the moment?

I think this season has been dreadful. TBH I feel it should have ended after Day1. Day5 was good but it took them 4days to get it right again.

Yeah, go for Battlestar Gallactica. Much better than 24 :D

I personally loved(and still do) 24 when I first watched it which was about 4 years ago. I went through the series 1-4 boxset in about 2 weeks. Back then I watched feck all tv, so I think that was part of the reason I was blown away. Nowadays if I began to watch it after experiencing shows like The Wire, Sopranos, Dexter etc I don't think I'd like it as much.

It's not everyones cup of tea but I still love settling down to watch Jack Bauer saving the world and shouting Damn It! every few minutes.

Home and Away being the most realistic out those (okay Band of Brother might beat Home and Away on that front)

24 is fantastic. One of the most entertainin and addictive TV shows ever made once you get into it. Season 1 is slow starting off but once it gets going it is brilliant, and rarely drags or gets boring, while tbh, I gave up on the Wire as I found it extremly boring and tedious. It tries way to hard to be intelligent and complex and while it does not fail, it is nowhere near in the league of the likes of the West Wing imo. There is a serous lack of activity in too many episodes, and with them being an hour long each, that is not a good thing.

Prison Break is nowhere near as good as 24. I have watched every episode of both, and tbh overall the worst episodes of 24 are better than the best of PB. After season 2 Prison Break turned very average, whereas imo, the best 24 season is number 5.
