I'm training with a MTB for our cycle around Ireland, have a pair of cycling gloves but hand get numb after about 30 min. Not many hand positions on a straight handlebar.

    Is this normal?

Should the handlebars be higher than saddle or same height?

Must confess, I know Jack Sh!t about MTBs but I do know there are a ton of bar grips which might do the job, like these :

Handlebarwise, I'd say start out level with the seat, especially of you're gonna be doing a lot of mileage per day. See how your back at neck feel after a long spin, bottom line, its got to be comfortable or you'll be miserable.

Your hands sould be lower than the saddle. Are you experiencing any shoulder or back pain? how long have you been training on the MTB? You may be gripping the bars too tightly, you could try changing your gloves for some that are less padded around the palm so you you don't have as much material under your hands. You could also try different grips.

Thanks, I think it has something to do with the saddle and handle bar position. Problem is it only starts about 30min into the ride so it's not as if you can make an adjustment and feel the difference immediately. The other reason I need to understand the problem, we are using 3 bikes for the relay challenge for 5 guys and all of us would want to change the position to suit best. I'll also do a run without any glove and see if that works, maybe ebay was not the best place to buy gloves!

Not hijacking your thread but noticed something similar myself. Recently started cycling again after a long lay off - just commuting to work, but loving it. Anyway, I've noticed that if I cycle for any more than 20 minutes I start to get pins and needles in my right hand. And then the longer I go after this the worse it gets. And only in my right hand. Very weird. Must check the saddle is above the handlebars, I didn't know that...

Lowering your handlebars is extremely unlikely to make your hands more comfortable.

I guess there's always the option of painting your finger nails and making the most of it!
