Have a cheapo unbranded USB stick from Maplin that can pick up Freeview (UK DTT)

Had assumed the MPEG decoding was taking place at software level and therfore I would be able to recieve RTE digital transmissions as well

But on the couple of occasions Ive been to the Republic (Truskmore Service area) since DTT started Ive only been able to get radio services, teletext and EPG data (No sound/pictures on TV channels)

The TV channels are showing as "locked" (Have the encryption flags been accidently set on even though the channels arent actually encrypted I wonder ??)

Or am I wrong in assuming that I should be able to pick up MPEG4

The software that comes with these sticks is usually only capable of decoding MPEG-2. Have you tried VLC?

    Edit:
Looks like all you'll be able to get for the moment is test cards :(

You can pick up those channels (I use the Maplin USB stick myself).

I don't know what software is saying its locked, but Mediaportal also displays it as locked, but will tune to it anyway.

As Onikage says, you'll need additional H.264 decoder software. CoreAVC will do it for a price, but DivX will do it for free. Ffdshow is also free, but I've found it's performance poor (I don't have H264 built into my graphics card, so rely on the CPU to do the grunt work).

All of these give you DirectShow filters that can be used by Windows MediaPlayer, Mediaportal, etc.
