    Just a reminder ... the A&A charter prohibits airline bashing. Feel free to discuss the position, it's merits, but do not make any derrogatory comments about AerLingus, or any other airline.

    I'd imagine that's why the mod started with "Just a reminder.." ;)

    All German companies though. I wonder how he will cope with Irish labour relations.

    Lufthansa Technik don't seem to be getting on too well.

    Still, some fresh blood should be good.

    Isn't it worrying that they hire someone whose last role as the head of an airline was for the ill-fated Sabena?

    Not so. DM was a mid-to high level manager but had no executive decision making responsibility at Emirates.

    Yup, Boards Aviation is a touch parochial to be called an aviation forum. Can't discuss anything here really. Even the friggin' thread on stalling was locked. Next you won't be able to talk about Airbus without some form of waiver. PPrune is really where it's at.

    Yes but in fairness to PaintDoctor and Pclancy as moderators, they have a duty to prevent this website from being sued by the likes of an airline for comments posted that are not based on fact. Boards is a company, and is therefore libel for what is posted. Its not just a free for all, someone is answerable for what is posted. Why do you think moderators exist at all?

    Pprune is different because they are not irish based and are unlikely to be pursued by an Irish airline.

    I, for one, like the aviation and aircraft section of boards because it is more calm and more informative than Pprune. Whether it be Armin_Tamzarian or Steyr and their latest photos or a well spotted repair on an aircraft, it is always interesting. As for pprune it is like a tabloid newspaper with a lot of hyperbole and a lot of irrelevant material.

    Delta Kilo summed it up nicely, but if you didn't get his explanation, let me make it clear. We've rules here, and if you don't like them, post elsewhere. If you break them, we will ban you. And most importantly, there's a boards wide rule about discussing moderator decisions on thread - it's an instant ban. If you have an issue about how we conduct the forum, take it to the helpdesk, or PM us. We're not monsters, and I do take the time to explain each and every time to users as politely and as non confrontational as I can why we've given infractions, or locked threads.

    I'll let you off this time, but if you discuss a moderator decision again taken by either OscarBravo, pclancy, or myself, you'll be given a temporary ban. We've a job to do here, and it's not a pleasant one. Try to give us a break and lighten up.

    Sorry lads, I apologise for my comments and retract them all. It's far too easy to say moronic things on the net and regret them.

    Fair enough. Back to Aer Lingus's new CEO then...

    The new guy is facing an insoluble problem. Aer Lingus is crippled by the unions. Suffice to say that the airline's management is between a rock and a hard place, with unions demanding money on one side and severe cost cutting on the other. Cost cutting must win or the company is bankrupt. If it goes bankrupt the Irish government will have to step in. If that happens the unions are going to look very very stupid indeed, and that will dramatically reduce the working man's faith in them. Frankly I can't see how Mueller is going to get around the problem without ignoring the unions, and that will cause chaos. In reality, Aer Lingus is fecked.

    Where did you see any EI unions demanding money? All EI staff have taken pay freezes and cut over the last 2-3 years. Only 8 months ago EI negotiated their last round of cuts with the staff.

    EI are like most airlines at the moment. In trouble. No argument there. However they are "relatively" lucky in that they have a solid core market, a (currently) positive balance sheet and have already rationalised/upgraded their fleet.

    The unions are too militant. They'll always want something back and it's going to cost Aer Lingus in the long run. That's my take on it, and I know plenty of people in EI who agree. Industrial relations are what will make or break the airline.

    Aer Lingus was rated 8th in Aviation Week's 2009 assessment of Top Performing Companies in the airline industry. The only other airline to score higher in Europe was Lufthansa. I doubt they'll be on the receiving end of any Government aid any time soon.

    8th out of x number of badly performing, overinflated, unionised companies is very, very bad. Besides, I'm not pulling my guesses out of thin air here. There's a lot of stuff going on that the media doesn't hear.

    That seems a bit positive....I don't trust that. While the competiotn may not be great at the moment.

    Who were the top 10? What is the poll based on?

    What about Ryanair, surely their performance is better?

    In Aviation Week's own words;
    this year's rankings of publicly-traded airlines identify those companies that are best positioned to weather the current global recession and recent volatility in fuel prices

    Here's the full breakdown of how the airlines are assessed;http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/generic/story_channel.jsp?channel=defense&id=news/WORKS.xml

    And here's where you can find the rankings;
    http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/eventType2.do?eventName=tpc2009

    Ryanair and Aer Lingus were ranked in two separate categories. Ryanair ranked 6th in the in the low cost carrier category with a score of 45 and Aer Lingus ranked 8th in the legacy carrier category with a score of 51.
