Battery not taking charge

I've a Compaq Presario V6000 and for the second time in a year the battery's not taking a charge. It appears to be dead. It's still insurerd. Could the battery just be dead or is there something else that could be wrong inside ? I'm asking first cause it's pissin' me off that this has happened again. Cheers for any help.

This is madness.... the battery... is working now
I turned the computer on an hour ago and it wasn't plugged in, it had about 90-odd% on battery and it's still working. I do not understand computers at all.
