adjusting front gears problem

    the chain wouldnt go up on the big cog at the pedals, so i loosened the tension on the derailleur to adjust the limit screws. done that and then put the wire back on and pulled it taught. i had the shifter left at the lowest gear when i put the wire back. then when i turned it up in gear it wouldnt move. slackened it again and figured that i had the hi limit tightened in not out and it wouldnt let the derailleur move out. so i fixed that and put the wire in again and the same thing but just not as bad. twisted the shifter round and and something slipped. think i broke it?

    can someone try and explain to me what im doing wrong or how i should be goin about it:o
