Trail races coming up...

    Hi,

imra has 3 trail races coming up, the first one is Wednesday week at (Ballyross) Crone Woods, with the next 2 on each of the Wednesday's after. By their nature they are not as hilly as the usual hill races and they may be a good introduction to hill running for people or a cross-over type of race for those of you who usually run cross-country, road or track. The Ballyross race is quite fast on an out and back fireroad. More details on the imra site.

    Cheers,

    SJ.

Just giving this a bump up again. Next Weds is the first of 3 races. Details here: http://www.imra.ie/events/view/id/637/
Suitable for anyone, but theres lots of people out there with training logs that a 9k race in the great outdoors would suit. Positive splits are easy when the 2nd half of the race is net downhill :)

Hi there SJ, I have attended 9 imra races this year and have decided to ask you a question on a different topic to the trail races. You seem to be a bit of a running nut so I have a question regarding the Garmin forerunner 405. I do not know if you have one but I'll take a chance. I plan to run the Cookstown half marathon this evening and I have just bought a Garmin 405. My problem is that I cannot figure out how to set the pace timer on it. I want to use this feature to keep my milage steady and even. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Uaithne O'Maoleoin.

Hi Uaithne, what exactly is the problem?
Is the GPS working? Is it tracking distance?
Is the problem that pace is not being shown on the screen when you're running?

To get pace to display as one of the fields:
    1. Hold the bottom of the bezel
    2. Go to [Settings] [Data Fields]
    3. Choose one of the screens, e.g. [Training 1] and press [Start/Stop] to select it.
    4. Choose the number of fields you want to display on the screen (probably 3), and press [start/Stop] to select.
    5. Now the screen should display the three default data fields.
    6. Moving your finger around the bezel will switch between highlighting different fields. Choose the one you want to change/replace and press [start/stop] to select. Now you'll get a list of fields to choose from.
    7. Move your finger around the bezel to choose the field you want to use, and press [Start/stop] to select it.
The fields I generally use for running are:
    Top - Lap Pace
    Bottom Left - Distance
Bottom right - Heart rate or Time
I also set the watch to automatically lap after every mile, so it gives me splits based on miles.

To get the watch to start recording data and displaying pace, this is what I do:
    • Hold the left side of the bezel, to go to GPS mode.
    • Select [GPS] and press [Start/stop] so the screen says [GPS-On]
    • Then I go into the satellite screen and wait until it gives me an accuracy figure of less than 100 feet (less is more! This will improve as you start running)
    • then I hold the right bezel to go into [Training Mode]
    • Then I push the two buttons at the same time, to lock the bezel
    • Finally, press [start/stop] to start your run, and press it again when you're finished.

Finally, read the manual. Use the watch for a week or two, and then go back and read the manual again. Wait a few weeks, and read the manual a final time. :)

There's a major thread about the Forerunner 405. Might be better to post there, as there'll be a lot more 405 users reading that thread.

Kusty, thanks for the help, you have been a great help. I will ahve to play around with it but today I am tight for time and just want it to allow me monitor the pace I will be running at so I can try to achieve a particular time without racing to hard. Cheers

    hi

Im interested too - just wondering what is the entry fee? and do you have to sign up with imra? if so what is cost? and will this membership expire end of year or can be carried through tii next year as kinda late in the year?

    thanks

Pretty sure you have to join IMRA - cost 10 euro. Each race after that is 7 euro which is a bargain. The membership does expire at the end of the year but if you start going to more of the races (and I urge you to, they're great craic) then the 10 euro will hardly register on your finances.

I second that. Its great value and great fun.

Yeah, you'd need to pay the tenner (or less if you're a student), but thats once off for the year. Then its just 7 euro a race. The best value 7 quid in town.

Thanks KC for sorting out the gps question. I've a measly forerunner 305 so not in a position to answer that.

Great race this evening. The rain was nicely timed to wash away the midges before the start. I've scribbled a race report on my training log. Hats off again to the ever improving Finbarr Mc. Early evening wasn't too far behind us too, so it'll be interesting to see team results.

Obviously noone told the ones near me - I've a few pink splodges coming up on my arms. None on my legs though. ;)

I enjoyed the race, but may have set out a little fast. Was about 30 yards behind dapope after about 15 minutes and he was just edging away when earlyevening passed me and I went on to lose another few places before the turn. Held my place (+1-1=0,net) on the way back but misjudged my pace a few times, thinking each little hill was the last and I'd just have to stomp down to the finish only to see another hill come upon me. 40 minutes, 40 seconds-ish. If it's out and back next time, I'm counting the hills.

I really enjoyed that. I was in a savage battle all the way down on the descent with some guy. I went all out the whole way down to defend my position. Ultimately he sort of gave up 200m from the end and finished two places behind me.

The way up was all about catching jlang and getting past him. I don't see much of dapope these days. He has bigger fish to fry.

    Roll on the next one...

    39:21 for me.

Boards AC 2nd in points, a mere 2 points behind UCD in this race. Shows the value of those little battles throughout the field.

I have *loads* on my legs. Very itchy.

You were also struggling wearing a pair of tracksuit bottoms which probably ended up weighing 2 kilograms when fully soaked (as they were quite quickly).

41:35 for me. I had to tie my shoe laces TWICE! Lost about 5 places. Shoe laces came undone a third time but I ran on regardless.
