Dentists ROI v. NI price comparison

I nearly spat a tooth across my dentists office when he quoted me 1,200 euro for a crown on a molar. After a little research it seems that if I go to Belfast or Newry I can have the same work done for half the price, I rang several dental practices and the average quote was 300 sterling of the work.

Can anybody explain this price differential? If it were 10 or 20% more expensive in the Republic I could understand, but 100% more expensive is simply a joke.
Speaking of going North, does anybody care to share their experiences or recommend a practice?
