Okay, so I'm currently 18.5 stone and want to lose about 5-6 stone. My worry is that I'll end up with flabby skin, as I already have stretchmarks here and there. Obviously, prevention is better than the cure, so is there anything I can start doing now to prevent this happening?

I'm just going to assume for a moment that you've little muscle mass, in which case your talking about a huge amount of fat to lose.

I think your going to have to accept a certain amount of loose skin I'm afraid.

Lose the weight and see I guess.

There are tricks to tighten skin, mostly used by competitive body builders, but the effects are very short lived.

In the long term the only permanent solution is probably a tummy tuck, but thats very drastic.

The skin does have a remarkable ability to tighten itself up. Just look at women who had kids, the belly does go back. :) If you are young, and have not been carrying the weight long, hopefully the sag wont be as bad as you expect. Not sure what you can do to help things along, apart from keep your skin moisturised and in good nick. Bio oil helps with stretchmarks btw.

23, only really been noticably overweight for maybe 5 years. Forgot about pregnant women. I was just afraid I'd end up looking like one of those really fat guys who lose sh*tloads of weight and end up with a mountain of skin. Its like, Jesus man, you looked better when you were fat

I'm not as bad as that anyway, so I suppose I haven't much to worry about. I'll try the moisturiser and bio oil every now and again, just to be sure. Cheers

    You are 23, chap.
You are young, your skin will adjust.
Older people or people who have been over weight for ages worry about that.
Even at that there is plenty of empyrical evidence to show that that stuff will go away if you keep eating and working out properly.

I used to be fat and worried about the same thing.

I lost the weight and now you wouldn't even know that I was ever fat - there is no sag. However, I did lose it all when I was about 24 so I was young but the skin is really elastic.

Good luck with the weight loss!

Remember it is about 80% diet 20% exercise. I didn't know this when I started and if I was sick I used to fret about not being able to get to the gym and thought my whole week of weight loss was ruined but was surprised that I still lost a lot of weight that week because I kept my diet in form.

But the exercise bit is still important :)

Oh yeah, read a lot of the stickies both here and the nutrition and diet forums. Think I have enough information. Little bit more willpower wouldn't go amiss though :D

You'll find once you start exercising you won't want to eat unhealthy or you'll ruin what you just did. Also, when results start showing (which can be quite soon) you will want to keep it up!

    Best of luck!
