3rd party Excess Insurance (CDW) for rental car

I have a Platinum American Express and a Platinum Capital One Mastercard and neither now cover car damage if I decline Collision/Damage waiver in Ireland. (Ireland, Isreal and Jamica for some reason are the only countries specifically listed as not covered). The used to but this has changed in last year or two.

I am renting a car for 18 days starting on Saturday so the rental car company will charge me about €300 for this coverage. That's about 50% of the total rental cost and I think it is even more if I get the SCDW (Super collision waiver).

I can roll the dice and decline it but that's too risky in Ireland.

I have however read about 3rd party companies that provide "Car Hire Excess Insurance" eg http://www.insurance4carhire.com and http://www.carhireexcess.com/ which can provide coverage for 1/3 of this.

Anyone know if these work out (i..e 3rd party over getting this specific insurance from Car rental company)? Has anyone ever done this? Seems too good to be true so that's why I am questioning this option!

    Thanks!

I personally do not pay for extra Insurance.

I see it this way. If it is my fault then it is my fault but invariably damage will be caused by somebody else so you can claim back your lost insurance excess through the other persons insurance company or by allowing the car rental company to drag it through the courts. Eventually you will receive your excess refunded.

Although should you drive head on into a wall and destroy the car you will usually have to pay the first €800 of the claim.

the cost of a single flat tyre on a rental pays for the extra insurance. A flat tyre on my last trip to Ireland while driving to the airport cost me €80 so I think it is worth it if I can get it cheap.

I also had a incident in Castlebar many years ago when my parked rental car was hit by someone and they did not leave a note. That cost me €800 in excess.

I have gone ahead and done this. Cost €57 for 18 days with Car Hire Excess

found this useful discussion on another board - http://www.askaboutmoney.com/showthread.php?p=742345

    If I have to use it (hopefully I don't!) I will post a follow-up
