Looking for somewhere to head on holidays this year. We usually do a fairly long drive around France/Germany/Italy, but we'll have the dog in tow this year.
So we don't want to be driving more than about 4-5 hours in a stretch. We're thinking of heading to Loire or Strasbourg area for a canal/river cruise. So anywhere on the way to/from there would be great.

We usually stay about 2-3 days in each spot cos we tend to do some power-touristing and we get itchy feet! We'll be curbing that a bit since we don't want to do too much driving with the dog, so the more things to do in one place to keep us occupied the better. If you get me!

Hi Olaola, we're just back from France. We were further south than you want to drive but on the way back up to Cherbourg we stopped off in the Loire Valley, just outside the city of Tours, for a couple of nights. We had this lovely B&B called La Grange Dimière http://www.lagrangedimiere.fr which had lovely gardens and a pool. Very good base for touring to see some of the chateux in the area. We then travelled up to Bayeux and stayed in the Churchill Hotel. Bayeux is only an hour and a bit from Cherbourg and a good base for doing the WWII beaches and cemeteries, if you're into that.
    Best of luck and enjoy.

Hey Rockwell, thanks for the info. Will have a gander at Tours now! That B&B looks really like my kind of place, do you know if they allow dogs?

Hi Olaola, I don't know about pets. Give Isabelle the owner a call (she has good english) and i'm sure she will clarify. The B&B pool and garden is a great place to chill out after a day touring around.

5-6 hours will get you (or another hour from Tours if you pitch up there) to Poitiers which is a fairly large town and home to Futuroscope a hugh science based theme park. Its on the Tours side of Poitiers and worth a visit. You could also reach La Rochelle or Il de Re in 5/6 hours have a few days there and then head over towards the Loire
