    €500 - €600 from a dealer

    €1500 - €1900 private

    That's pretty optimistic...

    You're joking, right?

I'm sorry OP, the SDI golf is not very desirable. You have all the costs of a TDI (road tax, fuel and insurance) but with barely enough power to mobilise it.

Twin-go is closer to the mark

but the high side of the private sale would require luck, more than anything else.

u'd be surprised, i got €1050 for a 99-lk, 998cc, 99,000 mile seat arosa, from the dealer, with no NCT, and a bit of work needed to get it up to scratch.

From a dealer : Depends on margin he has in car your buying

Private: Pretty spot on I'd say at €1500- €1900.

Thebhoy. The reason you got that is not because the dealer thought it was worth that much but because you probably would have got as much discount without it.

At the bottom end of the market, relativities get turned on their heads. The Arosa is desirable as a learners car. The Arosa costs €172 per year to tax as opposed to €582 for the Golf making it desirable for someone looking at cost of ownership rather than purchase price, if you kept it for two years, that would be €820 in the difference. It's just as quick as the Golf, just as economical, has lower mileage, will be cheaper to insure. On top of all that, if you traded it in, cost to change would be the only valid comparrison.
