Jobseekers benefit and medical card

    Hi,

I'm gonna be unemployed from next week on and will apply for JB initially. I have feck all cash or savings, no assets/ property etc. Would I be entitled to a medical card while unemployed?

I have checked HSC site etc. but can only find one sentence stating that if your only income is a means tested welfare payment you automatically qualify. However, afaik the JB is not means tested, does that mean no card and better off on JA?

    Thanks

if your only income is JB then you'll be entitled to the medical card. Apply for JB first because you'll need to have before going to the community welfare officer.

You have to go to your community welfare officer to apply, and you'll need proof of your income (or in this case proof that you've been let go at work, which will be corroborated by the fact that you've applied for JB)

Since it may take a few weeks for your JB claim to come through, you should apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance while you're at the community welfare officer.
