EBuddy push doesn't work!

    Hi folks
    has anyone else tried the eBuddy instant messaging app on the iPhone?

    The authors explicitly claim that it supports "push", so, even if you have closed the app, you should still get instant message notifications (Gmail Chat in my case) pushed to the device, and it should alert you, like a text message would.

    It doesn't seem to work though... I still have to open the application to receive any messages that have been sent.

    Is it unlocked and you're using a different provider to O2? All push notifications go through Apple and they have blocked push for anyone who isn't on the official network. More here.

    No, I'm using a 3GS, in contract, locked to 02. That's very strange, all push notifications go through Apple?? How do they do that? I had ruled out 02 as the problem cos I had tested it while on my own WiFi at home.

    I'd try Beejive, its expensive (under a tenner last time I checked) but a lot better for Multi-Platform chat with push.

    This might sound like a stupid question, but have you enabled push?

    Settings -> Notifications

    Are you jailbroken?

    Yep, I've checked all the settings, and Push is enabled, as are all the eBuddy-specific "Notifications" are all "ON" too.

    I'm not jailbroken - phone is a standard new 3GS, locked to 02 on billpay.

    I checked with a friend of mine and he also has the same issue, so I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else on here uses Gmail Chat and if eBuddy works properly with it (i.e. Push).

    EDIT: I know Gmail "email" doesn't support push on the iPhone, so maybe this is a related problem? Thing is though that the eBuddy people explicitly state that it does support push for gmail chat.

    Not sure about Gmail chat, but it might be worth creating a couple of AIM accounts to test it out.

    There's also an AIM app already on the store that uses push and I've found that it works perfectly.

    Works for me with a msn account anyhow - not sure about my gmail yet

    just to follow up, this seemed to work for me today! Very odd, cos I didn't change any settings.

    Off topic slightly (or a lot...) but does anyone using these type of programs wonder about the inherent security risks in using them? I was going to sign up for an ebuddy account but if I give them my gmail username and password, wouldn't that leaves me wide open for abuse if they turn out to be less than trustworthy? Obviously I could decide not to use it or not to give certain details but I'm just curious to hear other people's ideas on it.
