The tv series is absolutely terrible. Even worse than the recent film.

Stick with the books and the radio series (the first two phases at any rate).

I thought the TV series, low-budget and all that it was, stuck close enough in script and in spirit to the radio version.

The tv series was superb because of, if for no other reason, the Guide itself. In the days before computer graphics it was all done as individually drawn animation cells and still looks brilliant to this day. Sure the effects were dodgy, they would be on a par with Dr. Who episodes of the same era, but the cast and acting more than compensate.
