I saw one of those BFGs in a shop. It looked suprisingly good in real life compared to in photos. Or maybe I mean not as bad.......

I've played a couple and the ones I played I thought were nice guitars. The look is another thing. To be honest that one looks like it was knocked around a bit. That broken pickup cover didn't just happen because someone wasn't paying attention to their work.

So is it bad quality control or guitar abuse?

Based on the pickup routing, the fret dressing and some of the other elements in the pics I'd say it was built by blind chimps!

I remember reading a few years ago that Gibson were having difficulties finding qualified/suitably capable staff for the finishing of instruments. A friend of mine knows a guy from where the Gibson factory is situated and he said that the people working there are much like what you would find working in any factory. Mostly low paid, unskilled workers. CNC machines remove a lot of the skill and time required but you still need someone able to operate one. Similarly, afaik, Gibson have started using Plek on their guitars. This can produce great results but the neck relief needs to be set properly and the frets need to be properly seated. Again, these are things that require a certain skill.

It's been the same for the past 60 years even with other companies. Do you really think they're gonna hire highly skilled luthiers for what is essentially a production line? Not a chance.

Yeah, it dosnt stop them charging luthier prices for that sh1t though.

I wouldnt call €1000 luither prices but it is still shocking for this poor quailty finish. You should never buy a Gibson USA model online. Only buy one if you can inspect it first. They do put out alot of crap like this, but its like anything you gotta shift through the dirt to find the gold. It shouldnt be like that but sadly it is.

No, nor would i, i suppose, i thought it cost more than that. Not that im claiming to know what luthier prices are.

Regardless of prices, you wouldn't expect to find a poor finish like that on a €100 squier
