There's a knocking sound from my 00 Megane could this be gear box or steering problem?

Where does the sound seem to be coming from and when does it come into it?

It only started this evening and seems to be when its in neutral. Worst part is, I only bought the car last week.

Ok is it a splutter and a lack of power or is it a grinding whirling noise thats worse when you take your foot off the clutch...or is it any of these things?

Sense you only bought it last week, return it, with a full refund, because of the Sale of goods and supply of services act 1980, or just go for a repair!

The second one I think. You think it's serious? It's driving ok, I only went a short distance.

If you bought the car from a car trader bring it back, its under warranty.

If you bought the car from a private seller ignore this post.

I agree, if it was private, you were unlucky

Its kinda hard to tell. Best to get it checked by someone in the morning. Could be something simple like a heat shield on the exhaust. It used to always happen meganes. The heat shield would contract when it cooled and bang against the exhaust. Did it come into it after driving through rain and puddles?

Hit any large puddles lately? it could be the heat shield around the exhaust got bent a bit by the force. If so, its a simple 2 min job, I get on my knees and use a bit of timber to push it off the exhaust.

[Edit: Saab Ed got there first.]
