Absolutely the best site I've come across in ages, thank you so much. I remember seeing the Bon Iver one on youtube and thinking it was amazing. It never occurred to me there was a whole website.

I just checked two or three favourites, and really enjoyed them. Au Revoir Simone, The Shins and Bon Ivers contributions are all top-class, not least A.R.S walking through Brooklyn on their keyboards :D

There's a whole story about how these kinda took off, that I think is kind of sweet.

Vincent Moon, the camera guy, wanted to go to Arcade Fire's first show in Paris a few years back. Naturally, it was sold out, but he rolled up to the venue with his girlfriend, and held up a sign saying he didn't have tickets. Richard, the redheaded guitarist dude, caught sight of him and "thought he was nice", so he snuck them in backstage and into the show.

At the end of the show, Arcade Fire played into the crowd and then marched off out of the venue, still playing, the whole way down the street. From that, they got the idea for doing shows in weird places around Paris. Arcade Fire stayed friends with Moon, which is why most of the bands on it are somehow related to them - Final Fantasy, Beirut, The National, etc - but didn't actually record their own one until a few years later.

They roped him in again for Miroir Noir, and The National for A Skin, A Night. I think his style is a little better suited to shorts rather than full-length ones though, it can get a bit grating after a while.

There are a few knock-offs floating around too, that do the same thing but lamer...

Their youtube channel, for those of you of an embeddable persuasion:

Arcade Fire's elevator bit was used again as part of Miroir Noir, along with another spin on the idea. From about 1:50 on:

Love the Beirut one with Ed Droste too. I love Cliquot, but Condon never sings it himself. Last Final Fantasy show, Owen Pallett joked it was because "he's uncomfortable with the man on man action".
