Ok dumb question maybe, when online does iPhone revert to edge or 3g if wifi signal gets weak? Just I'm on now on home wifi n just noticed I got charged (again!!) for data when I'm on my own router. Getting pretty frustrating tbh this damn iPhone! I have every possible setting and all switched off n it still does it. Mad muffin how r u getting on with this problem. Noticed it happened using google maps, does gm override wifi or something
any advice appreciated before I fling this out window

take out the sim and try the experiment again. perhaps the phone is logging the data on the sim and then updates your account when its back online.
not good news if this is the case :(

Well I just haven't had a chance to call O2 yet to find out what data is being used.

Further tinkering has yielded no results. Again I have all settings off.

Location services off, email to manual, wifi on. Push is on but when I altered the APN it started hunting for a connection (even though wifi is on ) turned push off and it was still hunting.

I'm still getting charged 99c a day. its small packets of data, 4kb here 60kb there.

Here is just the last 3 days.

Uh oh, why is it not good news? *shudders* does it mean my poor iphone is broken? after i giving out about it and all. serves me right. just the data thing is *so* annoying when you think u won't have any money debited - hopefully just my stupid SIM isn't working?

ok have to get my case off and all, but will try that now. its so frustrating. Mad muffin i seem to have the same thing. i've been charged my 99c for today in the last hour, and i was on my own wi-fi

Didn't touch any apps today just to test, in case i was hitting them accidentally or something. so then i came home, hooked up to wifi, got a fairly ok signal the whole time, and hey presto, data used up

    ata 14/07/09 19:49 INTERNET 11.00KB €0.22
    Data 14/07/09 20:24 INTERNET 20.00KB €0.40

You know what would be nice...if one of the Talk202 guys would chime in, maybe have a look for us?

    *hint, hint, nudge, nudge*;)

oh i think i get it Eirlink - basically i should try surfing with no SIM - just loading up google maps now, and then later i should do the same on Wifi (with my SIM) and see am i getting charged?

another question, is it possible when i accidentally hit 'mail' a while ago, that it could still be downloading stuff?

oh i am completely confused to be honest. it's just so irritating not knowing what the hell the handset is going to do, its like having some crazy child misbehaving and u just dont know what its going to do next!!! i'm afraid to touch anything at this stage.

Jeez, its like i am cracking up and imagining things. and i don't think i am a technophobe or anything, heck i even managed to put in a brand new HD into an old iMac from 1998 and i managed to open the damn thing up and install a HD, and i never had such bloody confusion like i've had with this iPhone/data crack - makes me wanna send it back, or give it away to some of those ppl queueing up for one!!! Yiz can have it. GRRRRRRR :mad:

If you've jailbroken your iphone and installed Cydia, you can download an app called SBSettings which has on/off toggles for edge, 3G, wifi and other features.

i meant by "not good news" is haviving to remove sim to surf on wifi....pain in the ass. anyway, YES , mail would be using the sim, as i think yours would be set up to use the ISP.????.whatever setting to access the o2 mail server.

the apps on the other hand could be using the wifi to get to a website / ip address for updates. not 100% sure, but i suspect thats whats going on.

Take out sim and try to refresh / send receive mail and see if the wifi can do it. if it cannot then this is your problem.
If this is the case then setup mail settings to only fetch mail MANUALLY

    hope you get it sorted

    indeed
but what would be even nicer is if we ( on other networks ) could join the talk2o2 forum !!
its a walled garden for o2 customers. if you dont have an 086 number you cannot post on the forum !!!!

ah I see, yeah its a bit fiddly alright getting SIm out. Please forgive my previous rant readers, i just *hate* when my gadgets get the better of me! :)

ok, SIM came out and i was able to get email. I have it set to Gmail. Push is off and the settings for mail are set to 'manually'

i wonder did i leave wifi idle or something for too long, i notice when the phone locks, and i unlock, the wifi appears to go back to 'E' edge, and then the little wifi symbol comes back. did i just go off wifi and not realise maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

I have SBSettings and turning off 3G/Edge made no difference, whatever it is bypasses it.

w@ll3gurl, can you try something for me? Do you have speakers that will pickup RF interference from the phone?

With wifi on go to settings, general, network, cellular data and just add 1 to the end of internet. Then just press back. Do the speakers start to pickup constant RF interference from the phone?

AH HA!!! i think i might have copped the reason....i notice in my email settings there is one section i appear to have missed..under 'Fetch new data' there is another menu called 'Advanced'

when i went into that i see 'Gmail' and that setting was at 'Fetch'
I have now amended it to 'Manual'

Could that have been my issue all along Eirlink?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 844 ✭✭✭eirlink

    another thing...
make sure your iphone is not going into "sleep" mode. if it does then it swithces OFF wifi and bluetoothe to conserve power !

disable sleep mode in settings > auto lock>disabling the Auto Lock (Settings>General>Auto Lock> set to "Never")

    yep
you should really only need to get your email manually, otherwise your phone will take on a mind of its own !

You could try just deleting the APN name from the cellular data settings. That should stop any data flowing over 3g/edge and still work with wireless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭w@ll3gurl

eirlink and Stephen - thanks so much! you have saved me from cracking up ha ha (will make a note of that APN tip)

i think that autolock could very well have kicked in when i was surfing earlier. (i was doing so much earlier i can't rememeber but i have a feeling it did autolock when i got distracted) Would i have seen wifi automatically hook back up when i unlocked the phone again? if so, then i would say this is def what happened to me.

at least i have a reason anyway, i dont mind so much once i understand what its doing.

Mad muffin, i'll have a go at that for ya, i dont think my speakers will be any good here but i will try tomorrow in another place

let's hope at least i have found the answer. i'm going to keep testing!

Well for me like I have stated many times before that doesn't work. All it does is make the phone hunt for a connection continiously even with wifi on.

yeah thats what i do, well i add and x to the end of the APN name when im at home (cause my wireless at home is also kinda funny, signal drops and then fone switches over to 3g) works a charm for me!

Will the pair of you do me a favour?

    RING O2

    :D

They will end this mystery once and for all and tell you what internet sites your phone is accessing. You will then be able to see what you are being charged for and delete it accordingly.

    Please? :o

Well as predicted by me they are absolutely useless. The person on the phone told me they cant tell what data is being used. They can tell me what I already know from viewing my bill on the website.:(

They said it would be like them being able to read my texts, its a privacy issue.

I'm pretty sure my ISP can tell what websites I visit, I don't see why O2 cant.

And of course I was told the phone can only access data when the screen is on.

I have registered a few hours ago on Talk2O2, but have yet to have my account activated. I don't even know if they can help me anyway.

tbh, mad muffin - it sounds like more of an Apple/iPhone/App question, than an O2 one (though I know you haven't had much luck here...)

O2 are only charging for data that you device is requesting.

You know what I will restore the phone and not put anything on it. I will try to delete the APN and see if it starts looking for a connection and then restore it. Leave it for 24hrs and see if I get charged for data.

It just fills me with dread calling the help lines.

I ask the O2 person on the line can I bring over any credit I have if I switch to a clear plan from PAYG and was told no, Daryll says yes.

When I called up Apple Ireland to get a phone replaced the person asked me if I have an Apple Store nearby. I mean c'mon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

LOL, well what a mission to restore. as the phone finished to restore iTunes froze, restarted the computer and windows wouldn't go past the loading screen.

I was like OMG!! Why me?:(

Anyway got the computer back and running and the phone activated again, phew!:D

So the phone has nothing loaded on it I didn't restore from backup. The problem with it looking to establish a connection if I remove the APN is gone now (I wish I knew what that was :().

Last recorded data usage was @ 14.22 no email on it, location services off, no push. Now I will see if I still get charged for data.

if you switch data roaming on, that should fix you problem as you will not be using connection than your wifi...

    I don't understand?

You must mean data roaming off, no? data roaming is if you are roaming it does nothing if you are on your home cell phone network provider.

yes, sorry did not know that.... I though that it is aplicable to hardware....

You are quite right ;) well i posted on the talk2o2 forum and they have managed to narrow it down very well for me, other than this 11kb my phone was quite well behaved today. :D I will find out what that is tomorrow i'm sure.

Well I can confirm that a restored iPhone with nothing on it doesn't use data.

    The experiment continues.:pac:

So what you are saying some application is in fact responsible for using data. :p

    Well fancy that. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 844 ✭✭✭eirlink

    i bet 2/1 its mail

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

part 2 of my experiment is complete!:D

Jailbroke the phone and did a fresh reinstall of my JB installs. Changed the APN to internet1, the phone hasn't complained like before trying to find a connection.:)

Now just setting up the phone as new and syncing. I probably will never find out what it was that caused the problems with the APN or what was using data. I am just glad that now I can turn data usage on and off when I want to.

Anything else can use the wifi or can lump it.:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

The final part of my experiment is now complete and I found out what it was that prevented me from disabling the APN.

It is push notification. the second I enabled it through an App the constant Rf interference through my pc speakers started.

Turning off push in settings didn't stop this. I had to delete the App for it to stop. And its for all Apps that have push, I tried another one and it started again, only to stop when I deleted that one too.

Surely this must be a bug?
