It's the VAT rate and then about 3.5% import duty

I know loads of guys who have brought back guitars from the states and just carried them straight through customs at the airport with out so much as a glance being directed their way . Who is to say you didn’t bring it over with you. But if they do stop you its vat at 21.5% and 3.5% import duty on top of the vat.

All new goods being brought into the country must be declared at customs. Any poster suggesting methods to avoid paying tax will have their access to this forum removed.

You also have to declare secondhand items. Same goes if you are buying a secondhand guitar from the states from eBay.

    Do you get charged differently?

Nope, they don't care if it's new or used. You get charged based on the cost.
If you're getting something sent to you here they'll also include the cost of the shipping as this is considered a service and you must pay VAT on services.
An easy way to work it out is just get a quarter of your total cost and add it on.

Plus if Customs catch you acting the maggot they can give you a severe fine on top of the VAT and duty, as was posted here by one of Instruments board's most frequent flyers.
If it comes down to it the law is 100% on the side of the Customs, they dont have to prove anything, you do.:(

I travel back and forth with my guitars all the time and have never had a problem with customs. Even when I did spring for a new/used case for better protection.

But, I am a professional musician and can prove I've had the guitars forever. I always carry them onboard, too.

iv brought 2 guitars over from the states on 2 seperate occasions, and never had any bother with customs. although it really is just chance i think, so if it is an expensive guiatr, make sure you have the money for VAT just in case. if you end up not paying, then happy days! you have some extra cash! but do be prepared to cough up...;)
