Sucks for them. They only get July off or something crap like that. Good for when I want to go on holidays though.

It's amazing the sacrifices they're willing to make to a achieve a mediocre education.

Why do British kids put up with this though? My aunt is a teacher in England and she says they prefer to have lots of days off around mid term and bank holidays, etc. I'd much prefer to have the full 2 and a half months off during the summer like Irish schools do.

    Isn't Canada worse?

They get like 3 weeks in the summer. And a break for Christmas. Maybe something for easter? And then about 3 teacher days off.

That's what I heard anyway :pac:

Why do we still have 2 months off in the summer for schools?
    Why not:
    - Close 2 weeks at Xmas
    - Close 4 weeks in summer (July maybe?)
    - No other *defined* / mandatory breaks
    - Spread out the curriculum and planning a bit so that teachers and students alike can take another 2 or 3 weeks off at time of their choosing somewhere in the middle?

That still gives teachers 8 weeks paid leave which i'm sure the rest of us Johnny-4-weeks would like, but c'est la vie ;)

Irish kids have a great time, an average of three months off in the summer, free to doss, just like the Government :pac:

The shorter summer holidays in Britain were originally introduced as a fuel saving measure, i.e. increase the length of holidays when it's colder at Christmas and Easter and reduce them in the summer when it's warmer, and they save on fuel costs for heating the schools.

Brit kids have winter breaks to , usually two seperate weeks of .

Isn't it three months off in the summer for secondary schools??? In my school we started at 8.50am, had a 20 minute break at 11.20am, then lunch from 1-2pm and off at 4pm. Except for Wednesdays where we got a half day, off at 12.20pm :D.

My son is in his second year of secondary education and I have to say I despise this long summer holiday that he gets, as I'm born and bred British I think it's daft really... Bloody kids forget everything by the time they've gone back... just dossing around doing nowt for three months!!

The break up of schools for holiday periods differs around the UK.

England's already been covered pretty much, in general break up on the third week of July and return on the first week of September.

In Scotland I believe they break up on the last week of June and return on the third week of August.

Here in N.I. we have longer summer breaks than in Britain, breaking up on the last week of June (or really once internal summer term exams had finished which was usually the third week of June) and returning on the first weekday of September.

In my time as a school kid up here, the summer holidays were around 8-9 weeks long, Christmas varied, at its longest two weeks but other times as late as 22nd December and back on the first weekday after 2nd January. Easter is a half-day on Holy Thursday and back the Monday after Easter Monday. There's also half-term breaks, the autumn term (being the longest) used to last a week but my old school only had a three day break this year, the breaks for the Spring and Summer terms were two days each.

    I hate summer holidays.

I have four months off this summer which is way too long. I've been bored and jobless from day one and pining for college.
I wish college was on during the summer :(

College holidays are where its at. I think over the last two years I've had 5 months holidays each year. A month and a half-ish at Christmas (broken up by a few individual days of tests), a week at Halloween, two weeks at easter, and 3.5ish months for summer.

    College rules!

well it mustnt rule if your glad to be out of it for 5 months!

Friend (e-friend that is) of mine is Canadian and finished the 19th June (I remember it was just a few hours after my Leaving ended), they start again in September so they got over 2 months.
