I have an interview with a family next week for a Nanny job. The mum just emailed me to see if I have a Garda vetting form. Can anyone tell me what this entails and how easy it is to get one? What you need for it etc? Googled it but haven't really come up with what it involves. Thanks.

The employer has to get the garda vetting, not you.

The employer needs to register with some central garda office, who give her the form. You complete the form, and she sends it back.

I've heard rumours that the garda don't actually do anything with the form for the first six months at the moment, don't know how true it is.

Search http://www.citizensinformation.ie for "garda vetting" and it will explain whats required. In my experience its a 4 week process, longer for people who've lived abroad.

It would be unusual for an employer from the home asking for a Garda vetting form, usually used for schools, hospitals, other big employers. At a guess, I'd say she heard that people working with children were required to have one and decided to ask without really knowing about it. The following link goes into some detail as to who usually requires one:

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/employment-rights-and-conditions/monitoring-and-surveillance-at-work/garda_clearance_for_employees

It usually takes between 6-8 weeks to get one, depending on how busy they are (lots of grads will be applying at the moment, so may have quite a wait). Given the potential wait, if you can, I'd ask if a police cert of character would suffice. You apply in writing to your local Superintendent, and it shouldn't take anywhere near as long. Worth a go!

Yeh a couple of my friends are waiting on them at the minute. It takes up to 6 months currently, unless the employer has a lot of pull, think HSE or somewhere like that where they can get it processed within a couple of days.

Better safe than sorry. Might be a useful thing to have in the CV for future interviews anyway. Provided of course it all comes up clear :).

Not really .. it only says "BigZack didn't kill anyone up until last year". It doesn't say what you've done since :)

I just dont understand why security clearance for innocent person is taking so long, does it meant the Garda has,nt got Central computer?
If so then why not use fax to quick process Vetting stuff for people who are lucky to get a Job in this Bad time
    .
I have a friend who finished college but no work and now got opportunity to work in security sector but have been waiting for Vetting for months now, that has never been in trouble since birth and now the Job is gone. It is wonderful.

Im on the Disability Allowance because Im epileptic but I can still work under the CE scheme with FAS but all them jobs require Garda Vetting also.

I went for an interview last week and the lady told me that it can take up to 4 months for the forms to be complete, apparently because only a small number of Guardai in Ireland do it.

I decided to not even send it as I know the job will be gone and she also told me that even if I get a form completed and apply for a new job, I must apply for a garda vetting for the next job also...pretty much every time you go for a new job!

I think thats rediculous and unfair...having to get one for every job (even if your most recent was a few weeks ago!). How are we meant to get employment?!!! I want to get out there and do something but I must stay with the CE scheme. I have no choice.

Garda Vetting is carried out by the Garda Central Vetting Unit which is based in Thurles, Co. Tipperary. The Unit primarily deals with requests from organisations that have been registered with it to vet prospective employees.

The Unit also deals with requests from individuals looking for information regarding personal information relating to themselves held by An Garda Síochána subject to the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998/2003.

The Unit does not issue Police Certificates of Character.

Garda Vetting is conducted only on behalf of registered organisations and is not conducted for individual persons on a personal basis.

Garda vetting is conducted in respect of personnel working in a employment, and voluntary or student placement capacity in a position in a registered organisation, through which they have unsupervised access to children and/or vulnerable adults.

Within current disclosure policy, details of all convictions and/or prosecutions, successful or not, pending or completed, in the State or elsewhere as the case may be are disclosed to the authorised liaison person in the registered organisation (not just for the past year as suggested by a previous poster).

If you are an organisation seeking Garda Vetting for your personnel, the Chief Executive Officer or Managing Director of the organisation should write to the Garda Central Vetting Unit providing the following details:-
    • A description of the service provided by the organisation
    • The approximate number of personnel requiring vetting per annum
    • The level of substantial unsupervised access personnel will have to children and/or vulnerable adults
    • Any additional relevant information e.g. organisational literature orcertificates of registration in respect of charitable status
On receipt of this information, the Garda Central Vetting Unit will respond directly to the applicant organisation.

    The procedure is as follows:-
    • Personnel who are subject to Garda Vetting will receive a Garda Vetting Application Form from the registered organisation where they are seeking a position.
    • The applicant completes the application form and returns it to the Organisation. He or she must sign the form, thereby providing authorisation for the Garda Vetting process.
    • An authorised liaison person in the registered organisation sends the form on to the Garda Central Vetting Unit.
    • Garda Vetting checks on the applicant are carried out following receipt of the application form at the Garda Central Vetting Unit.
    • As a result of these checks a Garda Vetting disclosure is issued directly to the authorised liaison person in the registered organisation.
    • An individual vetting subject may obtain a copy of their Garda vetting disclosure from the authorised liaison person in the registered organisation to whom it was issued.
If you are an individual who has been requested by an organisation to provide Garda Vetting you should advise the organisation of the above procedure.

Garda Vetting will only be conducted, and relevant disclosure will only be issued to an authorised liaison person within a registered organisation for Garda Vetting, predicated on the written authorisation of an individual vetting subject to do so in a Garda Vetting application form.

All decisions in respect of the suitability of applicants for positions in registered organisations for Garda vetting are the sole responsibility of the registered organisation concerned.

A Police Certificate is completely different and is issued by the Superintendent in the District where the relevant applicant resides, or formerly resided, in the Republic of Ireland.

Police Certificates are issued for the following purposes:-
    • Foreign Consular Authorities
    • Foreign Visas
    • Establishing a Business in other EU States

If the Garda vetting is taking along time, are you allowed to contact them directly to check on your status with the vetting.

They will and can only deal with the organisation that sent in the application.

Was onto their Hr Dept, I am one stage away from being offered the position. They say it's the vetting holding things up and that they cannot contact them. So I am in no mans land.
