My Inspirion 6400 is two yrs old, Dell say I probably need a new battery. (over €100)
I'm wondering if I continued on this way for a while, until I'm replacing the whole laptop, would there be problems later on?

You won't have problems, the battery will just keep degrading over time. The more charge/discharge cycles you give it, the quicker it will lose capacity.

Even when it is 100% gone, you can still use it fine plugged in.

just in case anyone posts about doing a few full charge / discharge cycles to get it to 100%

yes it will, but only by resetting 100% to the charge you have in it now

the extra cycles will reduce the life of your battery a tiny bit further.
