Timing Belt on VW Golf

    Can anyone tell me when I need to change the Timing belt on a VW Golf. I am due to buy a Golf tomorrow and it only has 42,000 miles on it. I hear it has to be done after 60,000 miles or 5 years on the road. My Golf will be a 2002 so should I get it done or can i get away with waiting for 60,000 miles as it will cost me 500 euros in or around. Anyones help is much appreciated.

    You will be able to get it done for less that €500 for a start. About €350 way if you shoop around. Make sure its the belt and tensioners plus the water pump that gets done.

    If the car has never had a belt change get it done ASAP. It's 4 years or 60k miles - whichever comes first. The belt is made of rubber and can perish over time and wind up snapping. It's not the kind of job I would put off to be honest

    the Golf also has plastic pulleys which can crack and throw off the belt, I'd do it at 40k.
