Hard to suggest not knowing your budget, but a 1 litre Micra is hard to fault for starting off, give it a couple of years and then move on to happier motoring.

I was actually following one yesterday and couldn't believe how quick it was, and I was in a 2 litre TDCi Focus!

Yeh theyre nippy little cars alright...definitely hard to fault for your first car and cheap enough to replace anything that goes wrong in them.

I dont know personally but would a VW Polo be a nice one?
Diesel would be fantastic if you have economy in mind, the diesel (D4D) Yaris is meant to be quite good too. Mind you thats a 1.4 and I dont know about the insurance but it should be similar to a 1 litre.

Fiesta, saxo, clio, 106, corsa, yaris, micra.

Personally I'd go for the fiesta based on reliability and cheapness of parts for it. (same prob goes for micra/yaris but I am more familar with the Fiesta)

Not that nice to drive without power steering. A micra is much more manageable without it IMO.

    Suzuki Cappuccino

Insurance is really cheap, they're only 660cc!

not that great in a big crash though.

Had this issue with my sister recently.

I gave up trying to find a Fiesta as they are nearly all destroyed. She wouldn't drive a Yaris because she hated them, same went for Micras.

Got a 1.4 Octavia in the end. Smaller money than a Fiesta of the same year (03) and not much extra to tax or insure (about €100 in both cases).

And she likes surfing, so the big boot is handy!

    Can't beat a Polo

especially if you can afford one from 99' onwards

Or a 1.1 Peugeot 206 ( if you can find a decent one) - they look great for a first car -especially the 3 door - group 3 so cheap

But like most things all the best cheap ones are in the Uk

Good site to tempt yourself - spot a car/colour you like
    http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/

    from my own experience:

Two of my friends had Fiestas with no rev-counter and are now the two worse drivers I know - otherwise a good reliable car - cheap parts

I've known a few lads who had a 106 - all trashed them and added bad mods

same with any old fiat punto or cinquecento - doubt you'll find one that'll last even a year

    Interesting.

Old model Polo only has 3 star NCAP, beaten there by the Punto, Clio and Yaris
    Polo 1.0 only has 50bhp
Power steering is a rarity on the older ones
Equipment is very basic, with manual windows and no central locking common
Clutches get heavy. gearchanges get clunky and vague

I could go on, but it'll probably fall on deaf ears anyhow. Polos are pleasant little cars, but any of my friends who bought them in college or as first cars were disappointed with the frequency of problems and costs for preperation for NCT,

Compared with something like a Starlet or Micra, Polos aren't at the races for reliability.
