    Hi,

I have been living in in England for the last 8 years because of work and I am now about to move home, my question is in relation to the car I own. Will I have to pay VRT on my car when I bring it back or can I get the plates changed for free because I have been living in England?

    Regards,
    Josh

If the car is registered in your name for a year or more and the car has been insured for at least 6 months in your name then you can claim change of residency. You will have to prove you are moving from england to ireland (bank statements, pps number, proof of rent etc) and submit it with your application in the vrt office

My understanding is you can reregister it here for free, or some nominal charge...but cannot sell the same car for 12 months I think. Shouldn't be any problems!

My girlfriend is English and moved here last year. There is a bit of paper work involved...you'll need P45 from job in England, bank statements (english) etc...but your local tax office will advise. It can take a bit of time...two months in my girlfriend's case but she'd nothing to pay at the end of the day. (And she actually wrote off the car the day she got her Irish plates!! Lol!)

I have registered a car for free also. I needed a p.45 from job in the UK, proof of insurance in the UK for the 6 months before moving back, a few pay slips and bank statements for the year I was living there. They will also want proof that you are moving back here long term. I showed them a payslip(from my irish job) for this but I think there are a few options.

The best thing is to ring one of the offices and ask them for the list of info. I didn't have to wait like the poster above I went in and they registered it on the spot once I had the required documents. I found the whole process quick and easy.

You need to have owned the car for 6 months or more also and you cannot sell the car for a year from the date it is registered here.
