OK- In light of all the Northern Ireland bargain alert threads, and rip-off Ireland threads which are all doing a good job (and totally justified) of informing people of what's what-, I just thought the whole thing needs a bit of balance/uplift/ out of the doldrums approach- listening to Glen Hansards' Once CD this evening- and got to thinking what I paid for an original Frames CD back in the early 90s- checked the collection and it cost IR£13.99 - HMV sticker still on it - a lot more from both a price and cost of living perspective for the Frames CD- not saying that proves anything but just wondering, what's your example of total depreciation/price reduction/better value on goods purchased in the past Vs similar goods purchased today- other example that springs to mind is better quality cars for the EUR3.5K price range- 15 years ago, that pretty much got you a total rust bucket

    A service rather than goods.

I have broadband with Eircom since 2003. I can't remember the price exactly but I know I was paying much more back then for a speed of 512k as opposed to 7.6m which I have now. Having lived through previous recessions and the Celtic Tiger I was never affected by either. It is a horrible thing having 12% unemployment but that does mean that 88% of people are still working and I know some of the 12% are working in the black economy.

I'm also aware that both of our examples relate in some part to technology -that over time always reduces in price in some way due to take-up/usage etc-
on reflection - very difficult to compare ANYTHING in a like-with-like manner I guess- saying that, I do believe that it depends on the 'basket of goods' you compare - I suppose what I am asking is: the things you treasure the most or spend a certain level of income on- are they more or less expensive than they were 15/20/25 years ago relatively speaking - has quality improved but ure paying the same price relative to your income? etc

    Converse Footwear - £34.95 in 1988 (about €45)
    €55 in 2009 - 20% increase in 21 years.
