Green Lantern film

Warner Bros. Pictures has hired X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Proposal star Ryan Reynolds to play the title role in the anticipated Green Lantern, scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release.

Based on the DC Comics hero, the action-adventure will be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti. Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.

The Hollywood trades say that Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test. The studio had holding options on the actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds' option would have expired end of day Friday.

Production is expected to begin in January.

The "Green Lantern" was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell. Introduced in 1959, Hal Jordan is a second-generation test pilot, an ordinary man who was given the power ring and battery (lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. When Abin Sur's spaceship crashed on Earth, the alien used his ring to seek out an individual to take his place as Green Lantern: someone who was "utterly honest and born without fear."

Reynolds recently starred in Fox's "Wolverine," in which he played Wade Wilson/Deadpool. The character is now being developed for a spin-off to which Reynolds is attached. He also played Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity.

The actor will next star in Buried, a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn't know where he's buried in the desert.

I like the decision. Reynolds will add some much needed star power to the role of Hal Jordan, and I do think he can strike the right balance between comedy and drama.

Knowing very little about the actual character aside from the fact he gets his powers from a ring and wears a crazy green costume, the director (Martin Campbell - Casino Royale) and star are reassuringly top-notch. Could be the Iron Man of 2011

    Always liked Ryan Reynolds..

His always-charismatic performances help even the poorest of films!

Reynolds is now headlining two comic book films. Deadpool Origions and now Lantern. I could see him being forced to drop one if he wises to be in the other.

I think Deadpool will be put on hold now, possibly indefinitely. In any case WB are the only studio right now with balls (Watchmen, TDK) so this is a lot better fit for Reynolds than a watered-down, probably low budget effort from Fox (Wolverine Origins) would ever be

Yeah, as much as I'd liked to of seen a dead pool spin off with Ryan Reynolds (he's perfect for the role) I don't think it will ever happen. Maybe a bit part in the next X-Men movie.

Anyone seen this fan made green lantern trailer? Pretty good quality actually. Glad an actual movie around the Green Lantern is coming to fruition though.

I think that we should all rememebr that this isn't the first time Reynolds has been attached to a superhero film only for nothing to come of it.

I quite like Ryan Reynolds, as has been said; he quite often adds alot to an otherwise bad movie. However, maybe he's just typecast or maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure I can imagine him being serious enough for the required role. Green Lantern isnt "stop the bad-guy and then spout one-liners". That maybe what he turns into, and may be a decent movie considering; but it wont be Green Lantern then...

That's easily one of the best fan made trailers I have ever seen. If I was ignorant to Green Lantern and saw that trailer in the cinema, my attention would be very much caught.

Deadpool is only worth doing if they do it right... and by right, I mean so so wrong.

Thats an understatement:pac:....maytbe in this movie GL can team with the Flash and Reynolds can play both parts. Hopefully this comes about though and puts an end to any talk of him playing Deadpool.

urgh, good in comedy movies but maybe it's the action type movies he's been in (blade3 and wolverine spring to mind) he's been terribly miscast imo.

    stranger things have happened

You think he was miscast as deadpool?

Am I the only person who thinks Ryan Reynolds is smarmy and unlikable?

Before anyone chimes in with Michael Keaton's comedy career before Batman - I'm not talking about Reynolds "acting career" either.

He's just the kind of person I wouldn't want to sit beside in a cinema for 2 hours. Not to mention paying 10 Euro to watch him as a leading man in a superhero film...

I'm not sure about him for the role. Hal Jordan plays it straight so a guy known mainly for his comedy roles might not suit.

Yeah he was a terrible pick for it....the only reason the whole idea of him playing the part came about was because it was mentioned in the comic...as a joke.

The coltish Gossip Girl actress will star alongside Ryan Reynolds in the Warner Bros.’ film based on the DC Comics hero, according to Variety. Production is scheduled to begin this spring with Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) at the helm.

GL is one of the few DC characters i actually took to.

its a great concept so im really looking forward to this film. i like renolds , and i thought he was brilliant in blade3, but i share others conscern that he seems to be putting himself forward for every superhero film out there which can be kinda bewildering from a fans point of view.

that and i really wouldnt have minded seeing him in the proposed deadpool film. but with first class being the next X film looking to be made (with singer back on as director no less) i think deadpool may be on the long finger

still i reckon he'd be ok in the role of hal and i think given a chance he can do straight with the best of em. comedy lads do seem to have this darker side to em that allows em to change completely if the opertunity is profered so we might be seeing his first real serious role.

be interesting to see what the story will involve.

I could be wrong, but was actor doing the green latern in that fan vid also in 2 guys,a girl and a pizza place with ryan renolds?
Wasnt he the boyfriend of the girl character?

Peter Sarsgaard is in talks to join the cast of Green Lantern.

The 38-year-old is attached to play the villain in Warner Bros' DC Comics adaptation, directed by Martin Campbell, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Sarsgaard would portray Dr Hector Hammond, a pathologist and senator's son who obtains psychic powers after discovering a meteor.

Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach from Watchmen) rumoured to play Sinestro.

I think it has every chance to be like a pleasant surprise like Iron Man was. I can only speak for what I've read by Geoff Johns (and Frank Miller) but the Hal Jordan aspect, like most DC characters, focuses on the 'cape', so his origin should be easier to avoid fans calling foul. Or it could be an incredibly camp movie with Coldplay's Yellow on the soundtrack.

Which was pretty much the only thing in Wolverine faithful to the comics version. ;)

Even though I think Hammond is a terrible choice - not that Green lantern's rogues gallery is particularly deep - I do love that casting.

I remember rumours that Sinestro was being set up as the villain for the second film in a trilogy and that Legion was going to be the bad guy this time around. However, it looks like they might be staying with the Johns origin rather than the Emerald Dawn origin. Do we know if there's another villain in this installment or if it's just Hammond?

I'm fine with either - there's no need to overcrowd the movie, but Hammond just doesn't seem like that great of a villain.

At least he's better than The Shark.

Tim Robbins has joined the cast of Green Lantern in the role of Senator Hammond, whose disapproving parental style is one of the reasons that Dr Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) ends up turning evil. The other reason, of course, is that Hammond Jr becomes infused with psychic powers from a strange meteorite and goes insane.Martin Campbell has recruited him to the cast to star alongside Ryan Reynolds (as our hero) and Blake Lively (as his love interest, Carol Ferris).

I spotted The Matrix Revolutions at 1:55 and 2:02, and Hugo Weaving's voice-over from The Fellowship of the Ring was used. 0.57 was from Superman Returns. Also, 1:02 is straight from the Justice League intro.

    Who can give me more?

Production is about to begin on the Ryan Reynolds superhero movie Green Lantern, and director Martin Campbell has filled the last two important roles in the cast. New Zealand filmmaker/actor Taika Waititi will play the hero's best friend, while fellow Kiwi Temuer Morrison has been cast as the pivotal, ring-bestowing Abin Sur

Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got to Do With It, Waiting to Exhale) is joining the cast of Green Lantern as Dr. Amanda Waller, a prominent character in the DC Comics universe, according to Variety. The film, currently filming in New Orleans, stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular superhero, as well as Peter Sarsgaard (An Education), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes), and Blake Lively (The CW’s Gossip Girl). Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is directing.

I wonder if Waller's presence is an indication of DC trying to create movie universe, like Marvel? I've always considered her a DC Universe character, not tied to any one character.

Not sure about that first pic of Ryan Reynolds in costume, it looks a bit...organic? I'd love to avoid seeing Mark Strong as Sinestro until I watch the movie, but he may be difficult to avoid!

I always pictured Hal Jordan as more of an Aaron Eckhart. Reynolds could be good though, he's definitley more suited to Dead Pool than this though.

I don't think dark and gritty would suit Thor or Green Lantern like it does Batman.

Green Lantern is very much a a Buck Rodgers style sci-fi story and Thor is total fantasy with all the norse gods. I'm not liking the pics of Asgard from thor so far though, haven't seen enough Green Lantern stuff yet,the costume ain't all that different to the books.

Yeah. I'm not convinced that there's as the appetite for the numbers of that sort of movie DC and Marvel are pumping out. I expect some of them are going to lose a lot of money, and comic book movies will fall out of fashion (at least somewhat) before too much longer.

Yea it's bound to happen eventually, it happened to the western, although you stll get the odd one. I'd be happy enough if comic book movies went that way. When I was a kid though all I wanted was more superhero movies, so I'm enjoying it as long as it lasts. I think the calibre of superhero movies in general has been pretty good apart from the few obvious failures(daredevil, cat woman, ghost rider...), when they give it to a director with genuine interest in the source material and give them creative freedom it seems to work pretty well.

I like Reynolds too, but the whole wisecracking thing he does, it's not really Hal Jordan, would be perfect for Deadpool and the Flash but not this. Still its hard to judge with that footgae yet, could be all completely out of context.
