Independant Films

What are your favorite independant films, and I'm not talking about the big mainstream ones like crash. I mean the small low budget gems that somehow avoided the limelight despite their brillance.

My personal favorite is The Man from Earth, a movie centered almost entirely in one room, relying on dialouge to tell a story 50,000 years in the making.

I think that first we should define what were classifying as independent cinema. Juno for instance is heralded as an independent classic but is in fact anything but.

I think that Primer is perhaps the greatest independent film ever made. Produced for 7,000 dollars but a group of scientists it takes multiple viewings to truly grasp.

Primer is fantastic but I think that it is carried by it's physics and each time I watch the film, it feels successively more amateurish.

I see an Independant film as any film untouched by a major studio, and that includes production, distibution and any other aspect of the films life. That is why I would discount Juno because it was released to a mainstream audience by Fox Searchlight.

well independent usually means anything outside of the big hollywood studios right?

Are we defining it here as anything outside of any studio? (it might narrow the scope better)

If we're talking about Independent film you can't start it without mentioning Easy Rider. It's simply iconic.

As for a film not released by a major hollywood studio I'd also have to recommend Rushmore, it's in my top 10 favourite movies of all time. (as a side the decemberists did a marvellous tribute to it in one of their videos)
