Car Clocked

I suspect a second hand car which i bought earlier this week at a garage has had its mileage altered. The odometer says that the car has done a certain mileage yet stangely in the service manual a record of a service completed two years ago shows a higher mileage than currently displayed. This entry is not stamped by a garage and there is no service recorded since. I did an online check that showed that the car has not been taxed for the last 20 months and that it had 2 owners instead of 1 which the salesman told me. Would it be easier to pass this to the cops to pursue besides being given the runaround by the garage.

Cops dont give a sh1t about this. Do a proper check on the car http://www.cartell.ie/ and if all doesnt add up contact your solicitor.

Talk to the dealer - see what he says. He may have bought it unwittingly. If he's honest he'll refund you, take the car back and make it his problem. If he tried to dupe you then he deserves all that you can throw his way.

First of all is it the correct service book for your car. Do the chassie details in the book match your car, I have came across the wrong service books in cars before.

contact the previous owner and ask him...

Secondly, the previous reading isn't in km's as opposed to miles? This had me very worried once when a Dealer marked one of the service's in miles rather than kilometres.

Not being taxed for 20 months isn't a major problem as it may have been sitting on the lot for this length of time.

    How?

when you bought the car off the dealer do you not ask for a photocopy of the VRC, that he fills out to change ownership? has previous owner details on it???

contact garage you bought car from and ask them for details of previous owner.

Er... No? I've never seen some one ask for a photo copy of the VRC, don't know why they would need one.
contact garage you bought car from and ask them for details of previous owner.

Unless the previous owner agrees, you can't hand out their details. Data Protection and all that.

If the car is over 4 years old try to get the last NCT's to check what mileage was recorded on those.

Would they give out this information ? I thought I heard some where they dont keep a record of it .

From a private sale, maybe. From a Dealer? No. I wouldn't give you a copy of the VLC if you asked me for it. I see no reason for it.
you don't know till you ask the dealer..

The dealer should ask the permission of the previous owner first before handing out their contact details. It only makes sense, I can't imagine you being happy with the dealer you traded your car into handing out your details to Joe Soap.

If you just ask for a replacement NCT they will give the printout from the last test with the disc on it, not too sure if they will give all previous to that or not.

    Thanks everybody.

Garage took car back and will refund. I know I could make an issue and claim but the salesman claimed that he took the car in good faith and merely sold it on without checking and I believe him (he is a car salesman after all!!!). The fact that he gave me a service record that contradicted the odometer also acted in his favour...
As cars dont\didnt require nct until 4 years old any clocking would be done prior to that and not show on national records and the garage only had the car for a few days.

Hope ye all get through the recession!
