    ive a old 98 nissan maxima 2ltr automatic,this last week when im stopped say in traffic,i apply the brake while leaving the car in drive,but the car fells like its stuttering,for example it feels like its no firing on al cylinders(even though it is),so when i take it out of drive and into neuterul,the cars fine,seems to me its when i engage the pedal in gear something aint right???

    Can't be the clutch, as an automatic hasn't got one.

    But your auto-box could probably do with an oil change/overhaul ...sounds like it isn't disengaging properly any more and is "creeping" more than it should, strangling the engine against the brakes when in drive.

    If it's automatic then it doesn't have a clutch, so we can be fairly sure it's not that.;) When you accelerate away from rest in drive does it keep stuttering, or is it only when you're sitting stationary with your foot on the brake?

    Lots of autoboxes have wet plate clutches but they are not like conventional clutches in a manual transmission.

    As peasant said, a change of transmission fluid would be the best place to start.

    If it is ticking over too fast it will be trying to move as you hold it on the brake.
