have to say, the trailer looks great, didnt expect Tobey maguire to pull off a really serious role, but he looks like he may have nailed it here.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP8B7t9lBvQ

december 4th 2009 in the US, that means they think it is a heavy oscar contender. could this be a directors gong for sheridan? I have heard very good reports of 'the hurt locker' and 'the road', not sure of any other contendersd coming on the horizon.

    Remake of Danish film Brodre.

Hope it's better than his last few films. They haven't been great. Decent, but not great.

Another f**king remake because Americans don't like subtitles.

Still, looks decent if clichéd - but Sheridan is good at that stuff. The trailer gives away too much though.

Sheridan is just a television director - incredibly overrated.

i thought IN AMERICA was completley over rated

television director??? what a stupid comment.

television directors dont get the recognised at the oscars, golden globes and independent spirit awards the way jim sheridan's movies have.

multiple nominations for best picture/director/screenplay and plenty of actor/actress nominations and wins to boot.

personal taste and saying you dont like his movies is one thing, but to call him a television director? thats just cheap.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,556 ✭✭✭Nolanger

It's an accurate comment - his films are TV movies - glossy, powerful, dramas. Sheridan has no originality, style, or genuine passion for cinema. He is not a world-class filmmaker just an overrated hack who is getting found out with every new movie. To be a top director means you have to stand out with you work - getting nominated for Oscars means nothing in the long term.

Susanne Bier, who wrote and directed the Danish original, had a decent english-language debut a couple of years ago with 'Things We Lost In The Fire'. Similarly concerned with the emotional fallout from loss and grief, it features fine performances from Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro.

I've found Sheridan's films hackneyed and emotionally shallow in the past, but the casting here looks good, so I might be tempted to give him another go. I'll be tracking down 'Brodre' for another look first, though...

Saw the trailer for this the other day and it was full of spoilers! I know it looks like more of a character study, but a considerable amount of the story was shown in the trailer! I'm sure there will be more to the film (plus, Natalie Portman), but Hollywood needs to stop putting so much in trailers. I like the occasional surprise in a film. One of the major ones in Brothers has already been ruined on me, and even though I'm not a big Sheridan fan, that will take away from the film somewhat should I end up watching it.

Agree johnny.. the trailer is ridiculous.

Watched it today and found it enjoyable enough... although it really didn't add anything new - I felt like I'd seen it all before in other films.

While the performances all fairly strong, Maguire's performance veered into over-the-top territory in parts. The young actress who played the eldest of the two daughters (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1933128/) gave an very mature performance for a 10 year old I thought.

The closing 30 - 35 minutes are incredible tense though.

Overall, entertaining with good performances but I don't think it'll clean up come awards time. *

    * But I have been wrong before!

    Saw this last night.

Sheridan has done it again. That is, wasted an opportunity to make a cracker. He wasn't helped by an average script and some overacting by Gyllenhall and Maguire. Thought Portman was very good though. And incredibly hot in it too.

It's such a shame as it was the chance to make something really good. There were some good aspects but overall a wasted opportunity.

Haven't seen it yet, but Toby Maguire has impressed me lately. He's great in the Good German.

    Out next Friday.

The Road is just awful. Terribly disappointing. A series of boring and sometimes pointless scenes. The ending voids the entire point of the film I felt.

It's a very good film. Pretty much identical to the Danish original - which was excellent. Although there are some subtle changes which threaten to unbalance the film. In the first half Sheridan focuses too much on one aspect, only to completely drop it in the second half of the film, leaving out a key scene from the original.

I watched the trailer for this movie at the cinema earlier tonight.
It stars Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal.

I'll be honest, this movie looks horrible. It feels very much like a rip off of a very woefull movie but done on a much smaller budget.

Tobey Maguire (Ben Affleck) goes to war. Leaving his wife Natalie Portman (Kate Beckinsale) and kids at home. He dies. His brother Jake Gyllenhaal (Josh Harnett) starts to look after his brothers wife and kids. After some time they fall in love. Turns out Tobey Maguire (Ben Affleck) is actually alive and comes home to find his wife with his brother. Problems ensue

I for one will not be watching this.

Haha Pearl harbour. Although I would have even went to Twilight if Natalie Portman was in it.

I enjoyed the film, the only problem I had was that I wanted to see more of the relationship between Sam, Tommy and their father. The scenes between Tommy and his dad are particularly intruiging, however Sheridan never allows the two actors to completely let loose at each other which is something I would have really liked to see. All the same though there was some great subtle acting by Gyllenhaal, he easily got the feeling of animosity between Tommy and his dad through to the audience without saying a word.

Best scene I feel was probably the birthday party for one of the kids, you're waiting on the edge of your seat for Sam to snap because you know it's coming.

Personally I think that it is worth going to see just for Tobey Maguires performance, I think he deserves at least an oscar nomination for it.
I don't see how you can tear down a Jim Sheridan film (that doesn't star 50cent) after only watching the trailer.
It's definitely worth a look in my opinion, but then again everyones opinion is subjective.

Two words that instantly put me off this movie: Jim Sheridan.

Really? Can't agree there - I thought Tobey Maguire's performance was the weakest point in the whole film.

    The scene with him
throwing a "wobbler" in the kitchen
near the end.. couldn't help but cringe at the overacting!

Agreed for the most part, though I did think the slow burning scene leading up to Sam losing it with his daughter was perhaps the best scene in the movie. All in all though, I think Gyllenhaal did a better job with Tommy than Maguire did with Sam.

    Very true...

But not just for Maguire. I thought Baillee Madison's performance and tear-filled eyes was equally as impressive as Sam's bottling up anger.

Young actors seem to be getting better, I was very impressed with them in Let The Right One In, Fish Tank, and now Brothers. Hell, even the red one in the last Harry Potter film was good. :p

My god, who is Tobey Maguire sleeping with to get such good roles? Seriously, his performance in Brothers is the most toe-curlingly awful I've seen in a film since Ben Affleck sleazed his way through Jersey Girl. It was impossible to take him seriously; you know he's angry because his eyes get wide and he doesn't blink. You know he's got issues because, well, his eyes get wide and unblinking. You know he's sad cos... etc etc. Dude cannot act. Terrible, terrible stuff. Not believable as a human being.

That aside, I liked Brothers. There were some genuinely funny moments, especially Tommy saying "
My head is spinning. I really shouldn't be carrying a child"
, which could have totally been a Ron Burgundy line ;) It's believable, the tension is ratcheted up nicely, it does small-town America pretty well and there are great performances from Jake Gyllenhall and the two kids. It doesn't totally 'pop'; I didn't think it was the greatest film I've seen in ages or anything, but it's decent.

Agreed. The kid acted Tobey Maguire off the screen. She was amazing.

I enjoyed this too, nothing special but I enjoyed Portman and Gyllenhall in it. The kids were great!

If anything I felt like the movie just ended suddenly and as a result felt a bit like a missed opportunity

Saw this last night and couldn'y wait for it to end, tought it was awful. I didn't feel any emotion coming across when she's told Sam's dead, nor did I feel anything from the movie when they find out he's alive. And because the trailer shows so much there is no tension until the last few minutes.
