Ok my first problem is i made a bet that I'd do the DCM 09, that was last christmas and I have not done much training since, can only do bout 10k in an hour now..Is it still possible if I were to start training properly now that I'd be able to finish in under 5hours?...2nd problem is I've a family get together in august and I'm about 2 stone over weight so dont look to good at all, how much weight could I lose between now and 2nd of august? I'm 23 5'11 currently weighing 14stone (fairly broad shoulders infairness so I can carry the weight except in my face!). I'm willing to follow any training plan or diets out there...I know its unrealistic and prob just dangerous to try and do either of them things but any advice would be much appreciated...

Not recommended but it can be done and a 60 min 10k is roughly equivalent (performance wise) to a 4:40 - 4:45 marathon so if you do teh training sub 5 is possible.

Google Hal Higdon marathon training plan, pick one you like and think you can do and get training, basically!

Oh absolutely you can. I only ever start training around July for the marathon and this will be my third one- bearing in mind I run all year though, usually 10k-15k runs. Get in plenty of easy shorter runs and keep one day a week for your extended run, gradually adding more distance as you get fitter. Sub5 is very doable and good luck.
Forgot to mention- make sure you wear the right runners, it might be worth getting your gait checked.

yeah, it's perfectly possible. As already advised, make sure you invest in a decent pair of running shoes. It will depend on how your feet are, how they strike the ground etc (gait as fatmammycat states).

I also recommend Hal Higdon, he has some excellent marathon schedules, I got through my first two marathons using his training plans, they work! Try this one for example

Best of luck, you'll be addicted to marathons by the end of it...and Dublin is a great marathon to start with.
