Connecting Macbook to an external monitor

    Hello :)

Have a HP 1858 monitor and I want to connect it to my MAC. I bought the adapter for it but all that seems to come up on the display of the monitor is my background. Is there a particular button (or function) that I need to press in order to get it working? Read the instructions and can't seem to find a solution :(

    Cheers!

I would think that you've the monitor set to be an extended desktop i.e. both screens work independently with your macbook being the master (having the icons etc)

    Either

1.you can drag the app windows onto the ext. screen (by checking the virtual position of the extra screen in relation to your laptop -> above, below left or right)
    or
    2. set the extra screen to 'mirror' your macbook

Both of these options are available in the display preferences

you can also run a very useful thing known as closed clamshell mode which works if you are using an external USB mouse or keyboard.

While your macbook is connected to the display close the lid putting it in sleep mode.

If you press a few keys on the keyboard; your computer will wake up and show the display on the monitor.

Very handy for saving space :)

You'll notice that if you move your mouse cursor off the edge of your laptop screen, it'll appear on the external monitor. You can also drag windows here. If you want it to show the same as your laptop, you can go to the displays (I think it's called that) section of system prefs and choose "mirror displays". There is also the option to make the external display your "primary display" meaning it has the menu bar and dock.
