Getting a Chinese Visa in Kuala Lumpur

We are thinking of taking a trip to KL in August while over visiting her folks.
I've read that during the Olympics in KL the Chinese Embassy were telling foreigners that they had to apply for a Chinese Tourist visa in their own home country.

This would be a major PITA for me - would probably get a cheapo flight to HK (Air Asia) and get it done there but that's extra expense and days wasted out of my vacation time.

Anyone have experience getting a Chinese tourist visa in KL since the Olympics?
