Moving to UPC

Am considering moving to UPC TV, BB & Phone. TV is no problem, they just reconnect the box I have in the room. Question is, how do they present the BB & Phone? Is it hung off the TV box or do they drill in a new hole for a box which you then hook the router into or do they hook into the existing telephone boxes? I'd rather hear peoples experiences rather than what a salesperson will tell me.

    Thanks in advance.

I got this done 2 weeks ago and UPC BB comes through the TV point and they simply add a box to the wall where the TV point is and connect one lead to the box for the TV and the other lead to a router that sits beside the TV box.
It's a very simple and a very clean installation.

I did not get the phone package, but if there is no phone point in the house then I think drilling a hole might be the way they do it.

    Phone comes through the modem.

    Guys

Appreciate the help on this. One last question - if the phone comes through th modem, then am I safe in saying my digi dialler on my house alarm will no longer work? Its not Phonewatch...

I don't think the installers will hook up the cable modem to existing wiring - mine didn't anyway. If your PC is not near where the TV point is, they'll give you a wireless router and a wireless USB key to connect up the PC to the net. Might be different now of course, it's around 2 years since I got mine I think.

I hooked my modem into the existing telephone wiring and it works a treat. Remember to disconnect the Eircom line from the house wiring before you do that as even if Eircom is disconnected, there'll still be a voltage on the line. I disconnected the line outside the house where it come in.

I can't see why a dial-up alarm system would not work with the phone line from UPC, I reckon it should work fine.

Unless it is a text based alarm system, rather then a dialler based system.

Does UPC support sending text messages over their phone line?

sms is not supported. if you have a monitored alarm it needs to have an internal gsm chip.

Are you sure about that, would a voice dialler (as opposed to a gsm dialler) not work if you wired it in *.

    * I know UPC isn't typically wired into the Eircom phone wires in a house, but instead just uses DECT off the UPC modem, but if you were handy you could certainly wire your old Eircom wiring up to it.

Of course perhaps the alarm diallers use special tones over the phone line and won't work across VOIP?

Anyone know how much a GSM dialler costs?

i'm pretty sure, i work for upc and the feedback from alarm companies in general and phonewatch in particular is that PSTN differs significantly in terms of voltage and frequencies involved in the VOiP system and as such is incompatible with anything but a GSM unit. Be delighted to be proved wrong though, I must admit :)
