Changing a gearbox and insurance costs

    Hey all,
    Just a quick question.

If I were to switch my 5 speed box to a 6 speed from a similar model for some better motorway revs would that be something that could negitively effect my insurance?

My thinking is that after a year or so myself and my mechanic friend will have a bash at replacing the 5 speed box from my mk4 golf with a mk4 6 speed. It would be free to do, even sourcing the box could be free and Im planning on running the car into the ground, gently mind you.

Alot of motorway miles will be had in this car and I wouldnt mind saving a bit more fuel and making things a tad quiter in the cab.

Just for clairty I was thinking of replacing the box from my 90bhp Golf TDI with one from a 115 bhp Golf TDI which has that illusive 6th gear for my Wagon.

    Thanks
    bbk

Doubt it would effect your premiums.

Equally doubtful it'd make much difference to economy. Is it worth the effort?

Well, I am still just thinking it out. I have no intention of doing in the next 6 or 9 months anyway.
It will be more of a situation that if something goes wrong with the current box, Ill stick in a 6 speed or once my warrenty is up and my research gives the conclusion that on the motorway Ill get a bit more MPG and a quieter cabin then Ill have a bash.

It would be worth the effort for me because I like projects like that, but it would also have to be backed up with the two criteria I mentioned.

    Thanks!

It wont effect your insurance premium but its abit of a pointless exercise.

no harm to let them know as its a modification to the original parts & let them confirm it doesn't afect your policy.
