Looking to buy a gun for protection

I live in the country, but a spate of vicious attacks in the area leaves my family vulnerable. I've never even shot a gun, but need it now for protection. What are my options? Do I apply for a shotgun licence like the farmers around me? What is the best choice for personal protection i.e. not shooting foxes etc.

Short answer, you can't, it's illegal.
Longer answer, you may not have a firearms licence for the purposes of self-defence or protection of an asset. And if you're seeking a firearm without a licence, that's an offence under the firearms acts.

Closing the thread before it becomes even more of a train wreck.
