    Hi,

I'v just started to try lose some weight. I know most of you on here are pretty serious about this stuff, but I am quite overweight and unfit and pretty penniless so I think for the moment I will get by without going to the gym by having changed my diet, cycling 3-4 times a week and doing pushups & situps.

Anyway my main question is, I've decided to follow the programs on hundredpushups.com and twohundredsitups.com/, which both operate on a 3 day a week basis. I'm just wondering am I best to do them on alternate or the same days? Also, what are peoples experiences or opinions of the above sites?

Waste of time in my opinion, unless you want to be able to do 100 push ups (which would be kinda impressive i suppose) :pac:

    Ok im no expert but..

Push ups work your pecs (chest) and triceps and your abs, they wont really cause you to lose fat, they will just tone your muscles.
Same with sit ups, you could have rock hard abs but you will look the same unless you lose the fat covering the muscle.

You should probably concentrate more on cardio (walking, running, cycling etc) and your diet to lose weight.

Again though im a 15 year old with no actual qualifications...
But i think most of the things i said make sense. hope this helped, good luck!

Dude you don't have to be rich to get into shape. There are lots of exercises that you can do with body weight and a little extra weight which are very effective.

    Push ups
    Chin ups
    Lunges
    Dips
    Inverted Rows (search on youtube)

As you get into it you'll find more and more that suit your specific set up.

Is there a local soccer/GAA pitch, you could do chin ups off the goals. Is there a kids playground which would be quiet in the evenings, you'll find excellent opportunities to do exercises there.

Hell the next time you're at the beach pick up some of the bigger stones and you have free weights. Wear a hoody doing chin ups and put a rock in the little pouch and you're doing weighted chin ups for free. Hold 2 very similar weighted stones (chip some off if you need to lighten one) in each hand and you could do weighted lunges. You could probably press them over your head too but that may be a bit dangerous as they're not the best to grip

Rubadub is the king of home workouts so he'll also add to the list above but they are just ones I thought of off the top of my head.

If there was one bit of kit I'd advise purchasing or making/getting for body weight exercises on its a set of rings. Mick sells them here http://www.irish-lifting.com/

Dips on these are awesome, few of my friends can even hold themselves up, let alone do a rep.

Also just to add, read the stickies on diet. If you are training you need your diet to compliment that training. No point in training really hard if your diet is really bad. Read a few threads here too and you'll see that generally people who think they have a good diet, usually don't (myself included) MIne is horrible at the mo and i rely too heavily on whey for my protein and should eat more veg and good fats.

Muscle burns more calories than fat. He's already doing cardio 3 - 4 times a week.

Have a look for a lad here called Rubadub on the fitness boards, he has a link in his signature for home-made gym stuff.

In the meantime, if you want to lose fat - get your diet sorted. Post up your diet so people can critique it and be as honest as possible, height, weight & daily eating habits.

    The websites look pretty good.

Pushups are a great compound exercise because they utilize your pecs, shoulders, arms (triceps), abs and back. I'd alternate situp and pushup days. If you do them on the same day, do the pushups first as they will use up more energy.

Cardio (running, cycling, etc) and diet control are the most important factors for losing weight.

The pushups will burn calories and increase your muscle tone (which will also boost your metabolism) but unless you control your diet (high protein, lowish carbs and fat) and keep up the cycling you just won't shift the weight.

I'm 6'1 and 17.5 stone... 20 years old. To whoever asked about my diet, I dare not post quantities as it would definitely be regarded as 'unsustainable weight loss' on here as I've cut back to about 1,200 a day, but anyhow I'm eating small quantities of fruit, yoghurt, veg, eggs, chicken throughout the day and then carbs once a day (weetabix or wholemeal bread/pasta/rice). (i.e. yoghurt in the morning, an apple an hour later, small chicken salad for lunch). I'm using FitDay to log what I eat, and it tells me I'm at about 45% carbs, 35% fats and 20% protein which sounds about right to me. Oh and I've been drinking 4-6 litres of water a day [constantly need to piss lol]

TBH my motivation is usually pretty inconsistent so these websites appeal to me as they are easy to follow. Once I'v seen some decent weight-loss I plan on increasing my diet to more normal calorie levels and doing more exercise [going back to rugby]. (I am lazy slob by nature and have had many failed attempts at an overhaul in the past, but the one time I did stick at it I lost alot of weight, kept it off and got fairly fit, so I'm hoping once I've gotten over the first few hurdles i'l stick with it again this time.)

Thanks for the advice about cost-effective exercise ;)

I'm in the same boat as u... I started the hundred pushups, situps and squats last week. I do them every mon, wed n fri. On tues n thurs I do 20 mins on a excercise bike. I'm crazy unfit so I'm looking to start of light and keep at it... Too many times I've tried to do too much at the begining n given up... I figure if I can stick at this and manage to do 100 pushups etc at the end I'll be chuffed and it will hopefully motivate me onto doing more and more.. I think they're great sites, is easy n simple to follow and u do notice the difference after the first week...

ditto on what vegetta said. The gym is not essential for getting fit and in shape.Take a look at the stickys for nutrition advice.

    I'd recommend taking a look at http://www.rosstraining.com/

There is tons and tons of low tech equipment and exercises in there that is easy to make and will produce great results.
