I have just been off the phone to the person who is goign to be connecting me to the sewer. He has told me that it will cost 1700 ex vat for him to make the connection, I also then have to get him out again to make the connection to the water mains and god only knows how much that will cost - I was told that the couldn't do the two of them at the same time becuase different people are involved. When we got the planning I had to pay a contribution of 12k to the council for the services, when I applied to the council to get connected 6 weeks ago I had to pay €900 for the water connection and €700 for the sewerage. Why is there such a convoluted way of doing all this - by the time I am finished I will have given the county council over 15k. Is this the norm with all county councils??

Im confused. Are you saying you are being charged twice for the connections?

Leaving the contribution charges aside the normal procedure is that you make your application for connection to the services and the council will notify you and include a list of the costs involved. That is your connection charges. Some councils may include an optional extra for the connection fittings. This will vary around the country.

There is a thread somewhere here on development contributions around the country. If I can locate it I will post a link.

Oh, the council dont charge VAT so the guy who told you that was wrong.

Edit: Link to Development Contributions thread
