Don't really know how to word this...but is there any software out there that will take an audio file and output the musical notes that are being played? I dont' know if it would create a midi file or anything but has anyone ever heard of such a program?

You can do 'audio to midi' in Cubase, but it will only do simple melodies - not whole tracks.

Well i'd be talking about short piano or guitar samples, would it work with that? Don't know if you'd be familiar with it, but i have Guitar Tracks Pro 3 by Cakewalk...would you know if this has a similar facility?

There are a number of wave to midi converters online if you google them. I've tried a few before but never worked that great for songs. If you are just converting individual melodies they should be able to handle that though.

Can you recommend a good one? Took a look there and there are a lot....to say the least.

I heard in the new winamp if you play a song it shows the chords being played , not sure if its a plugin or what but it might be worth your while checking out

That would work well, but i'm actually looking for the individual notes. If i can convert the mp3 to midi, i can then import the midi into a program like guitar pro or another guitar tab editor

Guitar Tracks has no midi support whatsoever (any version) - so worth maybe looking at a completely different workaround - what sort of music are you trying to get midi from? - parts of others music? - or your own?

If it's your own music you could get a guitar to midi converter and some other software to capture it?

Or are you making tab for teaching etc... -if you can fill us in on what you exactly want to do then we may be able to find a cheap work around.

    :)

Thanks. Its other music (not mine) i'm trying to get tabbed, this particular track is a piano track. My plan was to convert to midi --> import into a tab editor and arrange the music so that its playable.

Does this midi converter look like it might do the trick for the conversion bit.

That just looks like conversion between audio - the midi feature is for other stuff.

Maybe the tabs are already available online somewhere? - not sure if they would be legal! - or maybe they are available legally somewhere (you maybe need to post a query in the guitar forum?) - as the time it would take to convert and then fix these files would outweigh just buying the tab for the track by a mile.

No conversion software would be dead accurate.

This particular tab isn't available to download, and can only be bought lumped in with a whole rake of other songs...works out to be expensive enough. The conversion and arrangement times are something i'm not too concerned about; unfortunately time is a commodity which i have an abundance of. Besides, i'd probably find the arrangement part pretty interesting.

Any chance you could recommend a good mp3 to midi converter? I appreciate the help

Give that a bash and let us know if it works!

Melodyne will do that. Better to start with a WAV though, makes the job easier for the program, not something that was converted from mp3.

Quick update, downloaded a trial version of Widi which seemed to work alrightish, probably good enough for what i wanted....but the midi wouldn't save, so couldn't import into guitar pro...now onto Plan B.

Oh yeah, i tried the pluto link, but the conversion was fairly awful
